The cause of the crash is under investigation by the transport safety council, but earlier reports from the scene said authorities suspected an engineering truck that was not parked properly had slid down from a nearby road, hitting the back carriages of the train.

“Our train crashed into a truck,” one man said in a video aired on Taiwanese television, showing pictures of the wreckage. “The truck came falling down.”

Local media reported the driver of the truck, who was not in the vehicle at the time, had been taken in for questioning.
