The issue with Singapore right now is that firstly. ideologically it is locked in it's current path. The modern Singaporean state is rooted on western ideology, rule of law and a strong belief in the rule based order led by the western world. Rejecting this is rejecting the national founding myth, it's admitting that the entire Singapore national identity is a lie. The Singaporean security apparatus is also heavily reliant on western arms and tech, and western support. So despite all that has happened, sgreans still stubbornly cling onto "international law" because that's all they have.
Secondly. The Singaporean government is extremely terrified of the ethnic Chinese majority being swayed towards china's influence. Much more so than malays to Malaysia. They have spent tens of millions of dollars opening museums, artworks and various programs emphasizing on SINGAPOREAN Chinese identity, even gong as far as to open Singaporean Chinese museum. The stronger china gets the more unhinged Singapore will become.
What China needs to do is to patrol the Strait of Malacca constantly, thereby showing who is the military power in the region. Hainan island free trade zone is already taking port traffic from Singapore. Hong Kong is now becoming the world's major family office location.
