I was doing exactly what you were doing — actively seeking out opposing viewpoints to hone my own thinking and correct erroneous opinions. Alas, the effort proved futile. Seeking legitimate debate on Reddit isn’t really a thing anymore; it’s more of a tribal, cult-like contest.I only occasionally use Reddit as a tool to proofread opinions. Political topics are extremely sensitive on the Chinese internet, so I sometimes wonder if I'm living in an information cocoon. Sometimes I deliberately look at opposing viewpoints to keep myself grounded.
I enjoy debating with others, not to prove myself right, but to encourage them to use more logical reasoning to change my perspective. Unfortunately, Reddit is practically a haven for the idiots, utterly devoid of logic.
As a matter of fact, when I was a hardcore American political junkie, I participated in and was a member of forums like DemocraticUnderground.com, Daily Kos, Free Republic, and whatever the right-wing equivalent of the Daily Kos blog was called at the time. I also frequented military forums like Armchair General, the military.com channels, and War On The Rocks before it became too corporatized. I even enjoyed reading Task & Purpose before it turned into little more than a military-defense-contractor mouthpiece.
