Russia is still a space faring superpower. What failure are you talking about? Who else other than the US and China could send people to space? Russia has Glonass. Not bad for a failure.
So when Russia was supplying gas to Europe, it was a success. But when it is supplying gas to China, it is a failure? Why?
For decades, Russia had been dependent on the West. What it got in return was NATO, missiles, Jihadists, and Nazis creeping up it's borders. When Russia was embracing the West, it had a basket case economy and nearly lost the Caucasus. The West have been talking about breaking up Russia for centuries. But yeah, no danger.
When Russia becomes "dangerously" dependent on China. Big trade deals. Factories left by Western companies reopening. Economy stabilized, despite the war and sanctions. Peace on Russia's Far East. No 1990s economic collapse. China treats Russia like a brother, not a child. If becoming China's "bitch" looks like that, why the hell partner with the West?
Ukraine joining NATO would have ended up with a Nazi state backed by NATO with American missiles and nukes on Russia's border. If there's any indication of what kind of threat the Nazis in Ukraine would have posed to Russia if they had NATO weapons and training, just look at the ongoing Ukraine War.
Ukraine is not like the Baltics, Finland and Sweden to Russia. Ukraine have always been part of the Russian civilization until 1991. When Ukraine was separated from Russia and then turned into a hostile Nazi state, the Russians see it as an existential threat to their civilization. That is why Russia had to deal with Ukraine. It doesn't matter what the rest of the world thinks. Ukraine is a personal matter to Russia.
Throughout the Ukraine War, Russia have singlehandedly dismantled decades of NATO weapons stockpile, doctrine, and assumptions. That's an achievement that nobody in the "Free World" can come close to matching. What is your criteria for success? Russia is killing thousands of Ukrainian Nazis, trained, equipped, and guided by NATO. But that's failure to you. The Israelis bombed thousands of civilians in their homes in Gaza and Lebanon. Does that look more like success to you?

Similar problem as USA, where both parties are incentivized to keep the status quo instead of fixing it because they get their pay check from wealthy billionaires that have zero interest in changing the status quo because that's where they get their profit from, not to mention both political parties suing other political parties to get rid of competition while psychologically convincing people that voting for 3rd parties is bad and wrong to keep people voting for Democrat/Republican.
As far as i know the only place in USA where suing another political party is disallowed is California where they have a socialist party called the Peace and Freedom party, which is actually getting more popular especially after the release of the Epstein files.
Obviously not all of this applies to India especially the 2 party situation but its similar none the less especially with the fact that both democrats and republicans have their own propaganda news outlets which are designed to keep people divided which in India corresponds to Modi and his political party's nationalist rhetoric especially to whole blame China and Pakistan thing to keep people distracted from the real problems.
Space faring superpower that recently lost its only launchpad for manned missions. Its lunar missions also ended in failure.... Compare that to the USSR. These are some of the achievements of the USSR:

Now can you really say with a straight face that today's Russia is in any way comparable to the USSR? Putin had decades of high oil prices to build a solid economy, instead he built a corrupt kakistocracy. In theory Russia has everything to be one of the wealthiest and most advanced countries in the world.
It's not about depending on power when you can be friendly with BOTH powers and enjoy benefits, at least when you are at a weakeer position. Both depending on China and the West is dangerous. Russia and Japan are 2 countries that are at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Ukraine joining NATO and the EU used to be a big if. If this stupid war never started, it was seen as yet another corrupt eastern European country and the western Europeans were wary of expanding NATO or EU eastwards, especially because of Hungary. And even if they did, so what? Russia is a nuclear power that won't see any direct threats towards its mainland.
Like anything by Meta isn't a US government owned(this is actually the other way around since Zuckerberg owns a controlling share in the company known as the "US Government LLC" ) surveillance app.
