And he prevented Ukraine from joining. Ukraine is a much more significant country and a big piece of the Slavic world, which is Russia's territory. Finland and Sweden are not terribly relevent.

Common sense. It has no chance of handling China by itself; the most powerful force that can help it is the EU, with a common interest of preserving Western power. Now the Western alliance is without its left arm while China just gained a hell of a wingman in Russia.

Europe and the Middle East were indeed becoming irrelevant for Americans from Obama administration. US started calling itself a pacific power and asked Europeans to carry their share of defending themselves because it‘s too expensive for the US to spend money into a part of the world that they don‘t consider as critical. Even after annexing Crimea, Germany was still buying gas from Russia and Russia didn‘t have to dangerously depend on China because they had options. In the end of the day, it‘s lose-lose for both the EU and Russia. Of course a Chinese would like what‘s happening because Russia has essentially become China‘s bitch but Russians themselves would habe other opinions. It is clear as day that this war has been a failure and the only thing that keeps this war going is Putin‘s ego and reputation.
Ukraine joining NATO wouldn‘t have done a goddamm thing as Estonia, Poland, Lithuania and now Finnland and Sweden joined. If Russia didn‘t cause trouble, the US would have eventually scaled down its European assetd and would habe moved to the pacific where the real game is. This is assuming that a corrupt country like Ukraine would have even been accepted into NATO and the EU. They had a bad reputation before this war started. Russia caused the very thing that they feared to happen.
