As others have pointed out the problem with laser. In fact, offense will always trump defense. Thats why you dont see armies trying to defend against bullets. They try to avoid getting shot.
Therefore, as offensive missile tech gets more capable, faster, stealthily, it will become impossible to defend against it cost effectively.
Then the options for surviving will be
- Concealment, essentially hiding behind civilian infrastructure.
- Hardening, Putting critical infrastructure underground for better protection.
-Dispersal, spread valuable assets and infrastructure widely
China obviously has the money and industrial capacity to defend against mass missile attacks with interceptor missiles, but they will have to eventually adopt those tactics as well.
Bad fundamentals are going to make Japan more likely to attack. Cars and other industrial products can't be sold anymore outside because of intense Chinese competition; they might just turn them into arms factories and make arms with America to contain China. Japan with the backing of America can build a huge ballistic missile arsenal in relatively short amount of time. Japan is just super hateful towards China; a lot of people there literally has no political views other than hating China. Remember that Japan literally had no way of defeating the US in WW2 and still attacked them.
South Korea might also be dragged into a war with China if US stages some false flag attacks and South Koreans aren't very friendly to China either. US, Japan and South Korea are both strong industrial powers that's capable of making lots and lots of missiles. If China gets attacked first by barrages and barrages of missiles it would be pretty bad.
I'm honestly curious as to the real assessment by the senior levels of the CPC of just how much Japan intrinsically hates China and wants to completely destroy it and kill or subjugate every single Chinese. Do they still have some vain hope of future better relations with Japan? This naivety could very much lead to the downfall of China.
No need to get emotional over this. The way is remain calm while gradually taking step by step process to gradually get back against Japan rather than doing things all of a sudden with huge shocks. I know Trump does this a lot since he might not even live long enough to see the end of his term but time will tell if it was worth it.
After all what is most important is winning at the end of the day and it needs to be effective even at the loss of face. We all want instant actions or return but unfortunately a lot of things in life take time.

CPC doesn't care about Japs intention, they care about capabilities. The US also wants to destroy China, but even them don't have the capability to do so. China hasnt even start tightening the screws on Japan economy, they are hopelessly dependent on China for heavy rare earths processing, Electronics and ICT Components, auto parts, fertilizers, even antibiotics/APIs. For example, do you know they are 100% dependent on beta-lactam antibiotics made in China, without it you can forget about doing surgeries in Japan. China has so many levers to pull before resorting to any military actions.
