was it really cheap energy? i thought Russia-Germany deals followed oil market prices. in first term Trump berated Germany for Russian energy. Why should US/Arabs invest in exports when Germany was committed to Russian energy and Germany was part of JCPOA. I think deep down leftist nature of Germany wanted Iranian energy thats why they avoided US/Arabs for longest time.
This is not just limited to Europe. This year largest Saudi investment conference happened in Osaka in addition to annual symposium. This is before the current Tokyo Davos in Desert conference. underlying assumption is Saudi are trying to find out how much Europhile Japan has become by interacting inside Japan.

The idea that Germany and the EU by extension, would seek to start a trade war with China because they cannot solve their own internal structural and economic problems is actually not a new or even surprising one.
Seeking external enemies to unite against to sidestep having to make difficult reforms domestically has been the go-to European play since the Middle Ages. Europeans can’t stop fighting each other, so let’s all go fight the Muslims together in crusades! Oh no, Europeans are on the brink of fighting each other again now that the Muslims are defeated? Let’s go colonise the world. Oh no, we colonised the whole world, guess we can’t push this back any longer, let’s have two world wars because we just cannot get along in peace in Europe. The only reason we didn’t have a 3rd world war was because of the existential threat posed by nuclear weapons.
It’s just endless repetition of the same pattern. Europeans can’t agree and they will seek to go fight someone else so they don’t start fighting each other at home.
The only difference this time is that the power they seek to redirect their innate aggression against is fundamentally stronger in almost every conceivable metric that isn’t pure western subjective bullshit.
The Europeans might think they are save from retaliation a continent away from China, but China has escalation dominance in so many areas it’s frankly comical how many ways it can cause irreparable damage to the EU. If the European fools think their economies are under water now, just wait to see what a full blown trade war with both your biggest supplier and market will do to your industrial capacity. If they want to be more stupid and play idiot games with Taiwan or even dare threaten military force, China can open the floodgates of direct arms supply to Russia and see how safe the Europeans feel then.
To be frank, I think the delusion is so deep in Europe that they will still think China is all bark and no bite even if Beijing parked whole PLA field armies on NATO’s doorstep.
This is why the economic pain will not only not relent but get worse for Europe. Because China has concluded they cannot be reasoned with and cannot be relied upon to act rationally even in their own self interest. In effect, Europe is like a damaged dog that cannot be tamed. You can give it as much love and food as it wants and it will wag its tail and lick your hand, but one day it will still turn on you out of nowhere. And we all know the only thing to do with such dangerous damaged animals.
I think it is because at the end of the day, European politicians do not fundamentally believe in China's strength no matter what their advisors and intelligence agencies tell them. European powers have not suffered a major military defeat or been at the losing end of a major economic war with China before so they have no actual experience or accompanying emotions of defeat. All the hard facts and numbers they might be provided with just slide off because in their unconscious I think they still cannot believe China is stronger and at some level they think it will prove to be a paper tiger or will lack the will to hit back. They may not articulate it and may not even be aware of their own biases. They still think their individual countries are negotiating as true equals in terms of national power even though they are less than even one province of China in terms of population.
I have seen the same happen with other average people. They can be told about the achievements and economies of the major Chinese dynasties like Han, Tang, Song, Ming, Qing compared to contemporary polities in Europe. Some outright refuse to believe it. Others, while not explicitly expressing disbelief, give off the feeling they don't really get it and probably still think it is all overblown exaggeration.
It could take something akin to what broke the Japanese WW2 leadership when they signed the documents of surrender. They saw seemingly endless American planes filling the sky above Tokyo Bay and ship after ship on the ocean. Suffering crushing defeat and actually seeing the sheer material disparity awed and cowed them, driving home what dry numbers on paper could not.

How come they still want to raise interest rates when their economy is contracting?
