It isn’t the only desperation. Trump appears to be threatening a trade embargo with China in general. I wonder how long MAGA political influence can survive if China response with an trade embargo of their own.

Here's the problem: for many precision magnetic applications you need custom shaped magnets. You can get them from turbines and EVs but they'll be of the wrong shape/size/orientation. Heating them over the Curie temperature removes the magnetization. Some of the magnetic field shapes are quite tricky and is done with specialized fields. Remember these have to be nm precise for wafer patterning, a poorly aligned field that causes a 1 um shift or 0.5 degree tilt is unacceptable.
China mostly supplies the finished rare earth magnets.

This is an example how Europeans think their shit don't stink and smells like roses. Basically you have Italians here who think whatever they say without even thinking even though it defies logic is as good as gold. The West wants everyone to think also that whatever of theirs is more expensive means it's better quality. Or how about when it's about food, if some dish that originated from their poor people it carries all the romanticism of their culture and has to be the best in the world. But if it was from poor people from any other part of the world, it has to be close to eating garbage. Don't Ferraris have a reputation of breaking down a lot but of course that says nothing about their quality.
