Eh, still think it's just a negotiation tactic. Both sides are posturing for better position to force a compromise, probably because the talks are not going well behind the scenes due to neither side wanting to give ground, so they're back to posturing.

What's important is that this is between the US and China. It doesn't make sense for China to declare a trade war on the world over rare earths. China cannot win that kind of war.
Rare earths are ubiquitous, indispensible, and China effectively has a monopoly on them. It's absolutely the kind of strategic material that you can win a trade war with. Even better, the monetary value of rare earths is very little so China doesn't even lose out by not selling it abroad. The bigger problem might be that the US might not have anything valuable enough to trade for it.

That’s reminds me, 雙十節快樂! happy double ten day from the Republic of China, now located on the island of Taiwan.

my twitter feed now is nothing but butthurt Anglos and westerners trying to convince everyone that China is finished and that now Anglos America rare earths can take off! Also, MUH AI STONKS!!

Incidentally, perhaps America should try worshiping Chinese rather than Jews and expect more tangible rewards.

I think people are so focused on the RE aspect of China's latest move they're missing an arguably more important aspect: China has for the first time activated control over foreign sales containing Chinese components. Right now this component is RE, but the principle can be applied to everything that touches China's supply chain, and everything touches China's supply chain.

This is a major shift both tactically and strategically and will likely lead to a lot more cards starting to get played going forward

Pay attention on what kind of use China banned. All military uses. Ask yourself why China did this and why would China give up her security?

You can only pick one, earning money from sales or strict export control. And if China is determined to stop US from getting rare earth, then nobody else is getting them to prevent third party sale. Not without case by case license to trusted parties.
