I would never describe it as such, we're not Americans and we will never become that arrogant. Pakistan's situation is not looking good from the outside, there is a real chance China's investments may become void in the future, that's why it is concerning.

Which is a real pity, there was a genuine attempt of nation building in building up Pakistan's economy by China, a prosperous Pakistan is beneficial to China. Hopefully Pakistan can sort it out but it doesn't seems hopeful

Ruling a country with religion is not a good idea. No real great power is built on religion. You can tell that from India, Pak, Iran, etc. Strong powers like former UK, USSR, and nowadays US & China, do have some common values, like liberal democracy or communism, but none of these are religions.

Religion indeed has advantages to unite people, but also bad disadvantages to limit people's talent/free minds & make people less willing to pursue a better life. Many guys who believe in religion often tell themselves, Oh, I'm not living well, that's ok, my religion tells me I can live better next life or Cow urine is great medicine. Religion makes men not think in a scientific way, and vulnerable to incitements.

The more you're educated, the less you'll believe in religion. And without enough educated population, you can't build a modern nation.

Religious parties have never gotten the popular vote in the history, its always been centre, centre left and centre right. Theyre propped up to pressure the centre from non civilians.

I mean when you look at history, most empires were at their peak when they had more faith in themselves over religion. And no when they were converting others doesn't mean they were more religious. Rather it just made a good excuse to fight. When you start obsessing over religion details over everything else it means you don't have faith to fix the problems with your own hands anymore.

It turns out that China is not the only country Michael Pettis has been spectacularly wrong about.

No coverage by Western MSM? What a surprise!

I'm very disappointed that toilet paper is not on the list.
On a related note, LMAO twitter of the day (remember when Yeltsin visited a supermarket in the US?):

Only Mongols Drungar was genocided, by Qing emperor, who do not follow ways of Han traditions.
Must point out that the so-called "Dzungar genocide" was a lie by the west.

In reality, many Dzungar tribes fought on the Qing side, such as

who had their portraits hanging in Ziguangge, the higest honor.

Besides, Dzungar was a political entity like a kingdom, not an ethnical group. It is one of the four western mongol (oriat) tribes. The eastern mongols were on the Qing side, the other 3 oriats were on the Qing side. It is only the last rebelious leader of Dzungar khanate Amursana and his die-hard followers were killed without being accepted of surrender. Ironiclly Amursana's predecessor Khan of Dzungar (Dawaqi) surrendered after Amursano sold him to Qing and were granted as prince first class and married to Imperial family.

Chinese way of dealing rebels or oponents are harsh, but not ethnically based. Manchu wasn't different. The phrase "wipe out" in Chinese context is wiping out the rebel, not the people who happens to speak the same language of the rebel.

This trend of re-interpreting Chinese and east-Asian history through the lense of western narrativity started spreading in general public especially wikipedia since early 2000s lead by the so-called "new Qing history" from the US.

South Asia is a forgotten place, always being ignored by west & east powers. Until war begins.

With China's rise, India was adored by US & Europe & Russia to deter China, which made India's over-confidence about itself.

South Asia was and is Gulf Monarchies playground and they are keeping it afloat. It is just they dont want to associate themselves too publicly with failures. thats why leaders from South Asia have to visit Gulf Monarchies too often.
look at this article. UAE believe on US but inside it says Chinese experts say otherwise. they shift the negative to others. now imagine how difficult to find there actual point view from those long essays in arabic.
Chinese experts have so far expressed scepticism towards the infrastructure proposals associated with Imec, criticising what they see as a familiar US pattern of overpromising and underdelivering.

former UK was never a great power if you put scientific standards. It had third world colonies managing raw materials and was falling behind the continental powers. Saudi despite super small population already gave drilling rights to Americans and FDR put at end to to the empire.
USSR end up fighting the previous generation Gulf Monarchies who were not really educated if you think about formal education. and this current Russia is only great power as long as it can correctly implement this soft power and Putin does course correction often and it is easy to observe that in his government even a Prosecutor want to be seen with a Saudi Prosecutor with that untied headscarf. this is a visual display. the three countries in the headlines is the real North-South concept for Russian industrial exhibition.

Iran actually has done really well economically from 1980s-2010. before sanctions.
