It’s better now, but growing up in mostly white suburbia, you develop an inferiority complex at a young age.Somehow i feel sorry for these Chinese americans, when they grow up surely some of them will become scientists, they will endure suspicion as "enemy within" all their life, they might be wrongfully accused as spies, prosecuted, even jailed just because of their ethnicity, basically they have to look over their shoulder all their life, i wouldn't wish that kind of life on my worst enemy
There are relatively little role models in popular culture and the ones they are typecast into nerdy, awkward and meek and it is reinforced by Asian parents who tell you not to standout and you represent the image of Chinese people to the community.
As an adult, I’m much more proud about my identity. I’m America and I don’t need to prove my loyalty to others. Just because I have a difference in opinion doesn’t mean I’ve done anything wrong, I pay my taxes and follow the laws. However, it is has been a journey to get there but there’s been a noticeable culture shift too. It went from condescending religious white conservatism to super progressive wokeness and honestly I prefer the former of the latter because they at least had a stronger work ethic and sense of community than what we have now. I will we could go back maybe 10 years ago and stay there before things went too far into the other direction.
