Well, this is stupid. I'm not sure how is it going to work in practice. Don't they just change it's name to travel agency or something to get by? US is really applying every pressure short of a full scale cold war.
Do we know what exactly happened. Right before the order to close, staff members were burning documents in the consulate courtyard. Obviously, they were notified of the order to close before the news broke. Anyone know what’s the backstory behind these recent events.

U.S. accusing China of interfering with U.S. internal affairs. Ie spying on intellectual property. Lol. Hong Kong cough. Anyone

It just another signal to smear China. US is going all out to demonize China to get the whole West on side in its cold war, because it ain't winning in the trade war. And El passo around the corner. The US doesn't like what it sees.

The US has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston, Texas, by Friday - a move described as "political provocation" by Beijing.

The US State Department said the decision was taken "in order to protect American intellectual property".

The official reason from the State Department for the closure is to protect American intellectual property. But there are other ways to deal with IP protection. You don’t close, let alone evict a consulate (consulate staff are ordered to evict within 72hrs). You do it to create a shockwave and send a message of provocation.

What’s more sad or disheartening is that the Huston consulate is the first consulate China established after normalizing relations with the Us in the 70s. Highly symbolic move with its closure.

How low can relations go from here? Is war even possible in the next several months or 1-2 years?

War isn’t possible within a span of months. You need to do massive mobilization ahead of time and that isn’t something you can do against a country the size of China within a span of months. Also, you need full industrial capacity to sustain a prolonged military operations.

In short, small scale clash? Maybe. Full scale war, most probably not.

I'm not in Houston lol...

But
China rescued US back in 2008
Pompeo was asking for help again
China said NO

I guess Pompeo was tasked by his boss probably to ask Vaccines from China I guess... finally his boss realized he will not get elected if he do not go all-in to tackle Covid after 130k-lives-late

Unless it is a strategic first strike against China with nukes, but then again something like that, you don't give away hints by closing embassies... so maybe something in the SCS, not a direct attack on China mainland, or maybe provoke TW to declare independence.

Maybe within few months something like gulf of tonkin incident will happen in SCS island. US always use old b*tch trick to accused other and use it to create a chaos all around world.
