Wouldn't be surprised if the US is working to balkanize Indonesia, because Indonesia is way to big for US comfort because if Indonesia develops they alone might give the US and AUS a bloody nose without no ones help.

A developed Indonesia would rival the US in terms of economic and military power

And that would impact Australia most of all, because they are relatively close neighbours

That would pose a danger to China as well, since the Indonesian territories would form a big island chain.

@AndrewS @BlackWindMnt Indonesia has the potential to be a regional power and a leader in ASEAN, If Indonesia fall so is ASEAN. So she is the next target, a regime change is not possible because Widodo is popular BUT balkanization can happen cause Irian Jaya are not Indonesian, so a Timor Leste style color revolution is now happening with the Australian involvement.

Indeed. Let the enemy to enter the gates and you are finished

And now Australia has sent troops there. "Invasion with Australian characteristics"
Imagine what would happen if the PM of Solomon Islands were to privately and publicly seek the security assistance of the PLA to help secure his country against the marauding bandits peacefully but at the same time demanding that Oz paramilitary forces leave and vacate his country by dropping the truth bomb that his country's recent attack was aided, abated, by Oz kangaroos gross interference into the sovereign rights of his country. I can imagine Scotty M. not abiding by this news and demand from a tiny island country and in so doing creates a potential clash with the PLA who is being legally requested to assist not only the sovereign legal government but to also facilitate the evacuation, protection of the Chinese citizens in the island and to pacify the violence. In my mind, this scenario would create an opportunity and also issues for China. The opportunity lies into the PLA rapid combat role deployment of all it's assets responsible for future combat against the Taiwan scenario. It'll hone the badly needed operational tempo in a somewhat volatile environment with respect to their hardwares and training not to mention the logistics, communications, and ISR capabilities. And it's the chance to show how potent and intimidating/formidable the PLA not to mention how far their modernization has come. The potential use of the PLA can provide the necessary shock to provide REAL FEAR into the PSYCHE of Australian CITIZENS (center of gravity) that their country's military weather or not it gets their Nuke subs and help from their 2 Daddies (U.S. U.K.) will not be a factor at all against China's PLA.

Plus, the constant refrain by American narrative of respecting the institutions of Democracy and protecting the sanctity of Democracy should be flipped around and be used against the Americans and her usual lap dogs both privately and publicly. If what happened in the American capitol was a blot to their super duper democracy and the people who attempted to storm the capitol were insurrectionists and must be held to account shouldn't these two important principles apply in the country of Solomon Islands? If the answer is clearly yes then whatever the leader and government of that country must be supported and their decisions BE RESPECTED AT ALL TIMES WITH NO MEDDLING. But if the response is a NO then all the hand wringing and crying by these Americans are going to be seen as nothing but POLITICS.

Having said that, the situation I just fantasized will never happen because China just doesn't want to get involved directly and too confrontationally because it does not want to operate beyond it's borders and take military actions that does not deal with its core issues i.e. TAIWAN. But if Xi had the mindset of Putin such scenario I concocted would be plausible or possible to happen no matter how remote.

Any sort of the Irian Jaya business flaring up will push Jakarta into a full blown alliance with Beijing.
