This nickname originates from an analogy with computer CPU models:
Intel's early processor series included models like the 80186 (shortened to 186), 80286 (286), 80386 (386), and 80486 (486). These numbers were often used as metaphors for "generations of cores" (leadership).
Accordingly:
  • 186 → The first generation of core leadership (the Mao Zedong era)
  • 286 → The second generation of core leadership (the Deng Xiaoping era)
  • 386 → The third generation of core leadership (the Jiang Zemin era)
