It's owned by a company in Hongkong, this is a much bigger deal then the previous stateless tanker they seized a week ago which was a legal seizure according to

This new seizure is completly illegal and and if not an act of war atleast straight up theft.

This video explains it in more detail

It’s just the Americans digging their own graves harder and faster. Sure there is little China can realistically do to stop the USN from pirating it’s tankers in LATAM, but there are plenty of ways China to response and counterattack.

The most obvious would diplomatic pressure and economic sanctions.

If we want to move up the escalation ladder, and obvious move would be a tit-for-tat seizure itself of sanctioned American cargo. Arms shipments to Taiwan would be an obvious target.

If China wants to play dirty, it would be child’s play for the MSS to plant an untraceable IED inside the crude storage tank of a real shadow tanker, full said tanker with crude, let the Americans seize it, and trigger the blast while its unloading at an American port. If they did it right, that blast will have quite a bang to it, to put it mildly.

Why do you always suggest the dramatic? Just poison the crude, let the Americans have it, and leave them wonder why their refinaries are having more and more issues.

Because tampering with the crude will require far more effort/inputs and will be far easier to detect by the Americans, since they should be doing testing of crude before feeding it into their refineries as SOP for purely technical and quality assurance reasons. The much larger logistical footprint of the sabotage effort will also be easier to backtrack to the true source.

Secondly, it’s not just the Chinese who can plant a bomb. Literally anyone can do it, on any ship they have access to. It’s hard to do on someone else’s tanker, but it’s child’s play on your own, and plenty of parties are ruthless enough to do that. Hell, if the Americans make a habit of this kind of piracy for profit, there are plenty of terrorists who could easily pull this trick. So this illustrates the sheer stupidity of the Americans in been so transparently greedy as it would be comically easy to Trojan Horse them this way. If a major American port does go kaboom like that, good luck proving who did it at all. Hell, it would be pretty easy to get some of the long line of terrorists and jihadists who have a blood debt with America to claim responsibility for clout and easily redirect America into another Middle East military misadventure this way.

And lastly, it’s more fun.

The cooperation is a distant dream, maybe impossible in a world with split factions and interests but at the end of the day, the most important thing is to remove the power of the USD in granting America the ability to force small nations to its will and to basically take everything for free by printing fiat money. Permanent damage to the US is to remove its ability to use its currency as a weapon and to out-develop its military so that it cannot do things like it's doing in Venezuela today. America's left and right are are its currency power and its military power. Cut both off and while you might argue that you haven't carved its body up, but, you've turned a country that was once an unopposable king of the world in to a harmless dude with no arms who has to mind his own business. That, to me, is permanent harm and lots of it.

You got this the other way around. The reason Trump pivoted to South America is not because he's no longer angry at China; it's because he's now scared of China after not only having his trade war offensive broken but also unexpectedly having a rare earths blade checkmated onto his neck before he was allowed to crawl away. China doesn't care about making Trump mad. Trump cares about not making his base mad because they elected him to bully China; he found out he can't but he can at least offer them the consolation prize of bullying Venezuela and that's why we are where we are.
I don't think you can cut that since currency powers will stay as long as USD is in high demand and no other currencies can replace USD in global scale. While US has the best geography in the world protects them from any harms that would permanently reduce their military powers.
