I am surprised at the sheer length of time it took before this surface on a major Western news outlet. News of the confrontation were making round on Chinese forums for at least a week before this tidbit came out.

Don't matter what the PCA kangaroo court says, those islands belongs to the PRC long before a UN was even created. They can never history or facts. They basically say it's okay for other to take someone else's land because the EEZ is the only one that matters as the weak international law.
Historical claims is baseless. If that's the case UK can claim the US and hundreds of other examples. At one time of the other someone has 'owned;' someone else.. just depends on how many hundreds of thousands of years you want to go back.
Court ruling is court ruling and needs to be legally binding otherwise it's meaningless and can open a whole lotta can of worms that can never be closed.
