I am surprised at the sheer length of time it took before this surface on a major Western news outlet. News of the confrontation were making round on Chinese forums for at least a week before this tidbit came out.

Any more details? This story seemed to have disappeared from the media's attention with almost indecent haste.

Consensus on Chinese military forum appears to be that the JSADF F-15s illuminated (emphasis on illuminated and not locked on) to the Su-30s first, but the Su-30s took appropriate self-defense measures and engaged the F-15s at WVR range. The F-15s released flares and took off after presumably getting locked on. Whether the pilots did so manually or relied on the automated mechanism is unknown.

Pupu also released info that there was a similar incident between a J-11B and a F-15 earlier last month. Presumably the situation didn't escalate as far since we didn't hear anything about it in a major media outlet.

WaPo gives as breaking news just now the item that one of the to ladies in the running to be Prime Minister of UK has given up so the other can take over from Cameron without asking the members of the Tory party. Theresa May can be Prime Minister tomorrow and start the departure from EU next week. More probably May will pray and delay for months.

Don't matter what the PCA kangaroo court says, those islands belongs to the PRC long before a UN was even created. They can never history or facts. They basically say it's okay for other to take someone else's land because the EEZ is the only one that matters as the weak international law.

Historical claims is baseless. If that's the case UK can claim the US and hundreds of other examples. At one time of the other someone has 'owned;' someone else.. just depends on how many hundreds of thousands of years you want to go back.
Court ruling is court ruling and needs to be legally binding otherwise it's meaningless and can open a whole lotta can of worms that can never be closed.
Anyway we should open another thread since this thread is only for news reporting not for discussion.

So might makes right according to your argument? Historical contents shows true legitimacy instead of "right" for right now as a fad. Therefore China is on the right side of history.

Actually very few countries can enjoy such long continuous historical existence on basically the SAME piece of land, NOT colonial conquest. There's a big difference.

Historical claims of peaceful discovery is actually one of the very few peaceful ways any country could gain territory.

To rubbish that is to implicitly claim that only territory taken from someone else by force is legitimately yours.

The Americans fought a war to take away a piece of the British Empire and create a new country with it (before that, the British, along with other colonial powers, nearly exterminated an entire race of people to 'discover' it to include in their empire in the first place). Every land boarder in existence today was decided either directly or indirectly by wars.

To hold those boarders, won and created through war and bloodshed, as sacrosanct, while dismissing China's claims of ownership from genuine discovery (as opposed to the western sort of finding land someone else already calls home and taking it by force of arms kind of 'discovery') and claim to be standing for peace and the rule of law is the height of hypocrisy.
