The European car industry will figure something out, even if they use Japanese transistors or whatever.
Existing stock is few weeks.

Automakers/suppliers will need months to switch them out (I predict 6 months, but it could be more depending on what actual chips they were using, imo max 12 months).

That's like at least 1.5 Quarter without chips. Sounds like an stupid way to disrupt your own automotive industry

While Europe is shooting its own foot, arm and head, Chinese automakers are full on expansion mode worldwide.

Automaker group warns Nexperia chip supply issue could quickly disrupt US production

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A group representing major automakers warned late on Thursday that a chip disruption stemming from a dispute between China and the Dutch government could quickly impact U.S. auto production.

Carmakers and their suppliers received notice from chipmaker Nexperia last week that it could no longer guarantee delivery of its chips, said ACEA, the European Union's auto association, which also said manufacturing could be significantly disrupted.

In the United States, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents General Motors, Toyota, Ford, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and nearly all other major automakers, urged a quick resolution.

"If the shipment of automotive chips doesn’t resume – quickly – it’s going to disrupt auto production in the U.S. and many other countries and have a spillover effect in other industries," said the group's CEO John Bozzella. "It’s that significant."

Some automakers told Reuters that U.S. auto plants could be affected as soon as next month. They declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue.

The chips made by Nexperia are crucial to production of U.S. parts and vehicles.

The Dutch government announced on Sunday that it had as of September 30 taken control of Chinese-owned computer chipmaker Nexperia, citing worries about the possible transfer of technology to Nexperia's Chinese parent company, Wingtech.

Court documents showed the Dutch government's move came after months of rising U.S. pressure on the company. Nexperia was at risk of being impacted by a new U.S. rule that extends export control restrictions to companies at least 50% owned by one or more entities on the U.S. entity list.

Washington put Wingtech, which has 100% ownership of Nexperia, on the U.S. list in late December.

The Chinese commerce ministry issued on October 4 an export control notice prohibiting Nexperia China and its subcontractors from exporting specific finished components and sub-assemblies manufactured in China, according to a statement Nexperia published on Tuesday.

Volkswagen and BMW both said production in Europe had not yet been impacted by the issues but that they were working to identify potential supply risks.

The EuroTards aren’t the only ones going to get burnt. Literally every automaker except China is going to get burnt. No wonder the MAGA moron Bessent and Dotard were chest thumping themselves for the last few days. China lit another fuse and siegecrossbow needs to clean his fridge for an incoming supply of extra TACOs soon.

Word on weibo on what happened is during the meeting between Bessent and Li, Li picked up the phone right then and called up MOFCOM back home and told them to sanction Nvidia. Then after putting the phone down he then asked his translator to translate what he just said over the phone into english for Bessent.

Bessent was extremely triggered by this.

Bessent is just having a slow motion public stroke because he was so distracted by his desperation to get out of the room to call his stock broker he fucked up the rest of the negotiations and only realised later that he also missed an obvious open goal, two birds with one stone power move, since he should have looked Li dead in the eye as he picked up his own phone and called his stock broker to short Nvidia stocks. That might have actually shook Li.

Yup, not just the EU but the entire Western auto industry. This is gonna be hella hilarious in the coming weeks! I hope the Dutch don't climb down too soon cuz it would be fun to see the shutdowns and market panic first!

Since Nexperia is now owned by Netherlands, it seems like this is now an internal western problem that has nothing to do with China.

China’s response is really quite impressive if you think about it. It’s turning this episode into a real teachable moment for the entire EU, all with one small move that even the US and Dutch are struggling to frame as excessive.

So, the lesson being taught with an iron rod here is that if you are ever caught between the rock of American sanctions or the hard place of Chinese sanctions, you always choose to eat American sanctions.

With American sanctions, your company gets a profits hit, but can generally still survive by pivoting to non-American suppliers and markets. With Chinese sanctions, your entire manufacturing sectors gets rug pulled, and all your former friends and allies are lining up to kick your arse behind the scenes because their economies are also getting wrecked as collateral damage.

The smarter and less brainwashed Europeans might also start to realise that they should proactively move away from American dependency. Because while America is massively useful and profitable they are ultimately replaceable so your business can survive and even thrive without American suppliers. OTOH, China is literally the whole supply chain in many areas and there are precious few niche sectors where supply chains do not depend on China. So if China puts you on their naughty list, that’s game over for you as you literally cannot get what China supplies from anywhere else in the world. The only alternative is grey and black market supplies, but that’s no way to run a legitimate business. Especially when American and other western arms manufacturers are already draining that pool for their own needs.

China sanctions on Hanwha threaten South Korea-US shipbuilding ties, officials say

"China’s targeting of Hanwha is an irresponsible attempt to interfere with a private company’s operations and undermine U.S.-ROK (Republic of Korea) cooperation on revitalizing American shipbuilding and manufacturing," a State Department spokesperson said.
"China’s actions ... are the latest example in a long pattern of China’s attempts to coerce (South) Korea," the spokesperson said in a statement relayed to Reuters.

It's clearly incorrect to call it coercion as I don't recall China making any demands, it appears China simply wants them to die.
