India is still dreaming of playing imperialism games with Xizang. While it doesn't know it's true place in the balance of power. SCMP was also wrong to assume that there is a "thaw" in India-China relationship. There is no thaw, just management. China doesn't forget what India had been doing that easily.
China will appoint the next Dalai Lama with the Golden Urn, while India and the West can pick their own puppet. India and the West can lionize their puppet Dalai Lama, yet he won't matter to the people Xizang. He can rule his rump kingdom from Dharmashala or London.
In reality, India no longer has the influence to truly meddle in Xizang. Most of it is theatrics. More and more Tibetans are going back to China rather than the other way round. The window for Indian imperialism is rapidly closing. It could not even form a hegemony within its own neighbourhood. The amount of trouble that India could stir in Xizang is miniscule compared what China could do to India's North East.
China could technically ignore India's futile drama with Xizang. Yet, India is still squatting on the Chinese territory of Zangnan, and that cannot be ignored forever. China had given Chinese names for the regions around Zangnan. So it already wants that land back, one way or another. And India is helping to create the perfect casus belli by continuing to play stupid games with China's Xizang.

The Japanese strike me as bitter because they could have been what China is today but their ambitions were curbed so they are taken out their frustration on China. The Americans know their time to dominate the pacific is running out fast, they know if they fight China today there's a very big chance they'll lose and that will be the end of their hegemony so they are torn as to whether to just get things over with now or wait. They are in full panic mode hence the demanding of assurances from their vassals.
