Not to say this is my
personal answer to your question, but others have suggested that the situation in question (the condition of India v. the socioeconomics of Indian-Americans) is a result of
selective immigration.
The argument is
more or less that
only the best and brightest Indians are usually able to immigrate to the West in general and the US in particular, and these "best and brightest Indians" and their progeny tend to outperform the average American.
