Re: Military FAQ

Hello Gollevainen (haven't post in a while but still check in)
I was reading in rec.aviation.military that France is going to upgrade 27 Moroccan Mirage F1 for a whopping $420 million dollars and had a question or two. I've looked up Thales and found a radar that could be installed in a Mirage F1 and according to the site in other types of aircraft as well. I'll attach the link
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!
. My question is can a Mirage F1 equipped with this RC400 radar and MICA missiles do battle and maybe win against a Fulcrum 9.12? armed with AA-11s? Or can the Fulcrum because of it's better speed and turning still pick where and what point of the battle to fight? I'm not a pilot and was wondering if somebody can explain how a more advance fighter can get the edge on a older model type fighter equipped with advance missiles and radar?

My book has turn into a hobby because I can't write but still very interested in military aviation. If Ecuador were to some how pay for this upgrade like Moroccan's did for their Mirage F1s, could Ecuador's air force match up against Peru's air force? Still can't confirm anywhere if Peru's air force received working AA-12? Thanks

PS: I like the new web site and rules much better then the old site.

Re: Military FAQ

well Im not expert of french fighter upgrades, but to my knowlidge, Mirage f-1 has very nible peak, compared to rafael or Mirage 2000, so if that radar could be fitted, it would mean narrower planar diameter. But if equiped whit MICA, thye would poses serious thread to any fighter in the region. And if coming close in combat whit MiG-29, I dont know? MiG is one hell of a dogfighter and expecially whit AA-11, and if flown by equally skillfull pilot, I would bet on MiG. South Africans once held a practice manouvres whit their Cheetah (improved Mirage 5) against Russian MiG-29s and Su-27. Thougth SA pilos were far better than their russian counterparts, they still had to face the superiority of Russian planes, in close range battles.
But then again, if equiped whit MICA, Mirages could use that range advantage to encounter Russian planes.

But as for your book, Sorry to hear it. As author of some sort of myself, I say: Dont give up the figth!

....wait a minute...did i just say "author myself"?....:eek: :eek: ...eehh..öhh...hmm...okey you did't hear, see nor any other way noticed that part, right :nono: ?

A few questions, not to test anybodies knowledge, but because I am curious:

Around what percentage of Chinas overall military apparatus, men and machines, are in close proximity (~500km's) of Taiwan?

Does China have publically known staging and jump off positions (ie, the places where soldiers accumulate to set off from), to invade Taiwan from?

Does China operate sonar sensor arrays in the Taiwan straight, similar to those used by the US and USSR in the Cold War, as an early warning system to detect submarines?

Do Chinese MRBM's, Scud clones et al, operate from launch sites with pre-designated targets for a rapid launch, or do they sit in hardened facilities, with notice and targets needed prior to fueling etc?

I don't really expect you to be able to answer these with much certanity, but any guesstimates would be nice.

Okay, for the question with Taiwan, well, all unit of the Nanjing military region could be use to an eventual attack on Taiwan.

* 14th Air Defence Brigade (SAM/AAA), Anhui

NOTE:* 1st Amphibious Mechanised Division is the PLA's first armoured unit designed for amphibious assault landing operations. It is mainly equipped with amphibious tanks and APCs

** Nanjing MR deploys two tactical SSM brigades equipped with DF-11 (M-11) and DF-15 (M-9) ballistic missiles. These are the PLA's only two ballistic missile units under the command of Army, not the Second Artillery Corps.

***13th Air Defence Brigade has several AAA battalions and a SAM regiment, which controls 2 HQ-7 battalions and one Tor-M1 (SA-15) battalion.

The PLAAF have 4 Fighter, 1 attack and 1 bomber division in the Nanjing Military region.

And for the PLAN: one of the primary missions for the East Sea Fleet is to support the PLA in a potential amphibious landing on Taiwan Island. As a result of the worsening situation between China mainland and Taiwan since the mid 1990s, the East Sea Fleet has been receiving the latest warships and aircraft imported from Russia, including four Kilo class diesel-electric submarines and two Sovremenny class missile destroyers. A further two Sovremenny class destroyers are currently under construction in Russia, and expected to be delivered to the East Sea fleet between 2005 and 2006. The East Sea Fleet Naval Air Force is also equipped with the Ka-28 antisubmarine warfare helicopter and latest Sukhoi Su-30MK2 two-seat, twin-engine long-range fighter-bomber equipped with supersonic anti-ship missiles.

SEA UNITS

* Destroyer flotilla X 1
* Frigate flotilla X 1
* Conventional submarine flotilla X 1
* Fast attack craft flotilla X 1
* Landing ship flotilla X 1
* Logistic support ship flotilla X 1

SHIPS

* Destroyer X 6: Nanjing (131), Hefei (132), Chongqing (133), Zunyi (134), Hangzhou (136), Fuzhou (137)
* Frigates X 21: Shaoxing (510), Nantong (511), Wuxi (512), Huaiyin (513), Zhenjiang (514), Xiamen (515), Jiujiang (516), Nanping (517), Ji'an (518), Jiangxing (521), Lianyungang (522), Putian (523), Sanming (524), Ma'anshan (525), Wenzhou (526), Ningbo (533), Jinhua (534), Anqing (539), Huainan (540), Huaibei (541), Tongling (542)
* Conventional submarine X 7: Four Kilo class (364, 365, 366, 367) and three Type 039/Song class (320, 321, 322)

NAVAL AIR FORCE

* 4th Naval Aviation Division, Luqiao (J-7B/E)
* 6th Naval Aviation Division, Dachang (JH-7, J-6,)
* Training Regiment (JJ-6, JJ-7)
* Shipborne Helicopter Group, Wuhu (Ka-27/28, Z-8, Z-9C)
* Special Mission Group, Dachang (Y-8AEW)

As you can see, some are thoses units seems to only wait for a go-code to land on a beach and it's also special that 2 ballistic missile are directly under army command and not 2nd Arty...

I know you didn't give you a pourcentage, but still, it's better than nothing I think.

and for the rest, wait a few more day... if i can find some info...
