You could actually argue that you can only compare the Olympics that BOTH USA and CHINA participated in ;)

Icedragon and myself did. China competed in the 84LA Olympics.where USA won 83 gold. Perhaps if we wanted to have future face offs, competitions on their home soil dont count.;)

Yeah but that's when the Russian didn't participate, just like the US boycotted participated in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

Thats ok. It just means there were more medals for the USA and China to compete for;)

I finished watching a replay of China competeing the womens modern pentathalon. Both Chinese women and mens team share the same problem in that they cant shoot very well thus giving away valuable seconds. In the mens event it cost him the gold , taking silver. In the womens event it cost her a possible silver but definitely a bronze. Its a run and shoot contest where after a1000 meter run you got to hit five targets. and then continue on another 1000 metre run. I reckon the Chinese man and women were taking nearly three times as long to hit the required number of targets.

The former Soviet Union Countries, in London, made 162 total madels, in which 45 gold. 1980 & 1984 Olympics were not considered as "full Olymics," my friend.

Shooting is all about breathing control and discipline. Apparently that's impressive for these athletes to shoot straight after running a 1000 meters and then run again.

The way I look at it, this 2012 Olympics can be consider a reasonable success for the Chinese contingent. 38 gold / 87 total medals is a lot and would be enough to top most previous medal tally. More importantly, China has made new inroads in sports such as swimming, fencing, shooting, even athletics dare I say, where they won 5 medals. Coming into London, it was always going to be difficult to repeat back the medal haul of Beijing '08. And if not for some missteps, near misses or questionable judging, China might even have repeated their Beijing haul.

Coupled with that, America definitely have the "deeper" team. And unlike four years ago, most of their favourites for golds did indeed delivered. Having said that, with the retirements of some of their athletes (Phelps), maybe they'll have harder time in Rio.

All these just nicely set up their next clash in Rio 2016. Man I just can't wait for the next Olympics!
