Ofc ! a combattant in more a Frigate is not buid to fight only Pirates seriously ! in addtion guns are sufficient.
well, the INdependence class that just sailed through the Sout China Sea had the Harpoons mounted on the forwe deck in front of the bridge, just aft of the main gun.

I have also seen harppons mounted on the Freedomc lass boats.

it looks like to me, one of the two, probably the Independence class, are going to gt the NSM, which is fine by me. That's a new, very capable missile and they just cut the deal to manufacture them here in the states for the US military.

Does anyone have the info on the Freedom installation last I heard the NSM was delayed due to lack of funds

Well, it will takesome time either way. Back in October, still under the Obama admin, they said they did not have the funds.

But now the US Congress has approved the produtuon by Raytheon of the NSM here in the states and that is going ahead...so they clearly found some money or Raytheon would not be building them'.

Also, I mis-spoke earlier, the first contender for the NSM is the Freedom class, not the Independence, though they are looking at and pitching it for both.

I believe they should use the same for both LCS.

But they have already had an Independence class go to sea on an official mission with the Harpoon, so you never know...the Independence class may get the Harpoon.

Here's a couple of more pics of the Coronado, LCS-4, at sea, doing a FON exercise in the South China Sea, equipped with Harpoon missiles:

I xpect to see more of that on the INdpenndence class, but would like to see t be two quad packs.

    quote the relevant part now:
"MITRE’s new frigate, however, would be larger and more capable than the LCS it replaces, with a 5″ gun (firing HVP) and sufficient sensor and missile capacity to conduct air and missile defense over a wide area, instead of only being able to protect itself. MITRE proposes Germany’s new F125 frigates as a model."
    ...
    is this:
"A second disagreement came over whether to turn over a new leaf on the Navy’s small surface combatant – the Littoral Combat Ship and the LCS-based frigate design – or choose a path forward that protects the industrial base here in the United States. MITRE’s study recommended stopping the LCS and frigate program immediately and starting over with a new design, likely borrowed from a foreign shipbuilder for the sake of expediency. Banerjee said the Garcia-class frigates in the U.S. Navy fleet in the 1980s were similar to what MITRE thought the Navy should build going forward, but a naval architect on the MITRE study team didn’t think building that same ship would be feasible today. Instead the team looked at foreign options such as the German F125-class frigate, with two 5-inch deck guns that could fire the Hyper Velocity Projectile, Vertical Launching System cells and electronic warfare and decoy capabilities. He, like the other project teams, also said the frigate would have to have air defense capabilities that allowed it to escort other military and civilian ships, as well as strong anti-submarine warfare capabilities."

... I of course know at the same time it's a job program! ...
    is the the next paragraph:
"However, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc.), whose district includes the Marinette Marine shipyard that builds the Freedom-variant LCSs, questioned whether MITRE had considered the industrial base when crafting this proposal.

“Have you done any analysis of what that would do to the defense industrial base, because as I’m sure you know this isn’t sort of a turn it off, turn the spigot back on somewhere else,” the freshman congressman and Marine Corps veteran said.
“This is years of developing skilled workforce and improvements and efficiencies that happen every single day to make it more affordable.”

A simple minded approach would be license production of the F125 program with the winner building the hill etc. and the loser getting a substantial subcontract for system installation etc but I really don't know what's going to come of this all I know is the current LCS looks like a complete and utter failure from a warfighting point of view

this is an interesting statement:
“What is getting lost in the discourse is the real capability that LCS provides to the fleet,” Navy Lt. Kaitlin Smith wrote in a January article for the Center for Maritime International Security.

“LCS was … envisioned as a platform for ‘mobility’ related missions like support for Special Operations Forces, maritime interception operations, force protection, humanitarian assistance, logistics, medical support and non-combatant evacuation operations. Assigning these missions to LCS frees up multi-mission destroyers and cruisers for high-end combat operations,” Smith wrote.
