Brumby...I did a little editing on Lockmart's MMSC vessels.

The middle one in their brochure/flyer is likely to be the hull form for the Saudis...but it will be upgraded with the VLS and the 76mm gun of the larger vessel.

Here's an idea of what it will look like. The VLS may be oriented differently.

Yes...a good all around frigate.

I see a US version armed as follows:

01 x 76mm gun
16 x MK41 VLS with:
- 8 x ASM (either LRASM or NSM)
- 32 ESSM
01 x SeaRAM with 11 missiles
04 x .50 cal MG
02 x 3 Torpedos
Hanger for 1 x MH-60R and 1 x FireScout

...and of course the sensors to match.

if they can get these vessels for $750-850 million, the US would be crazy not to now that they will be being built for Saudi in any case. Just build them to US Navy speccs, with those type of weapons and whatever sensor changes necessary...and keep building them when the Saudi vessels are complete.

Twenty of these FFGs (forget the FF moniker) would be nice.

The current admin would not do this in any case IMHJO...but they will be out of office before it happens anyway. The next admin could do this.

We can only hope and pray they will.

I second that notion and use the other's for minesweeping humanitarian show the flag and other tasks that we currently use destroyers and cruisers for I might reenlist if that happened

As it is, IMHO, a really neat opportunity will exist for the US Navy. Since the FFs have not been built yet...or even started building...the US Navy should let this new design slip into becoming the 20 FFs. Saudi Arabia is going to pay for the design...so that will get done on them.

The US would need to negotiate a deal with Lockheed to get good pricing...but 20 of these vessels, if they could get them for say $750-850 million each, would be one heck of a deal...and indeed, just what the Dr. ordered IMHO.

I think the prospect for this happening is really exciting. I did a quick check on the FF program timing to determine whether it might sit well with the Saudi acquisition. As is, by next May the Navy is meant to provide the secretary of defence with an acquisition strategy to support design and procurement of the FF for production no later than fiscal year 2019. There appears to be a window to make it happen. I am assuming the Saudi variant doesn't require too long a development window given that it has been pitched to the Saudi for some time and probably also to the USN in the SSC study. Given the base line cost for a Flight 0 is $590 million and a Mk41 is approx. $93 million, your targeted cost of up to $850 million may be doable.

That would almost to good to be true

Well, Jura...they just hatched.

...

LOL Jeff by that Proverb I meant the usual dates like
Ordered
Keel Laid
Commissioned

back to USN FF ... now I noticed this:
While the new LCS won’t get the full Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) Block II being developed for larger warships, it will get what Greenert called “SEWIP-light.” That allows for a “soft-kill” of incoming missiles, not by shooting them down but by scrambling their electronics.
it comes from an older post by Bernard:
Here are the improvements to the beefed up LCS. I think 32 will still be of old design but 20 of the improved beefed up LCS. Some of the other 32 will get some upgrades of the beefed up LCS but not all.

Has anybody heard anything related since then?

In terms of sequencing, the configuration of the FF's have to be bedded down and then where possible to be incorporated to the transitory batch of 8 if timing still allows. Retrofitting to the initial 24 units I guess is dependent on how costly and difficult it is to do so. Since the FF's are not bedded down, nothing is happening.
