Not really a heavy-lift transport ... and therefore worth a new tread on light transport and utility aircraft.

Even more I found yesterday this image showing a strangely camouflaged Y-12.

Y-12 new blue camo - maybe 80x0x Naval Aviation Air Academy.jpg

With it's 80x0x-serial (??) it looks like maybe being assigned to the Naval Aviation Air Academy ...

Any idea ???

The number of PLA heavy transports is very small for a force its size, do we know what the numbers are for light transports?

!

There are only four digits ! ... so they can't be from the PLANAF ! ... I just got a note from "49er" (CDF):

My initial thought was the colours were equivalent to some Air Force Z-8KA's. Now I think the pictures were taken at Xiaogan ( 30.950038°,113.906595°), so 15th Airborne Army.
Note that the building in the background was build in 2014!

Serial should be 6x5x then?

I wonder

By Lena Ge, WCARN.com | Jun. 09, 2015

with a Colombian government owned airline SATENA (9R) in Bogota, the capital of Columbia.

AVIC International delivered two Y-12E aircraft to SATENA in 2014, which have been operating well in Columbia. The two multi-purpose aircraft has accumulated 1,700 hours of flying and transported over 15,000 passengers, making contributions to improving traffic links among remote areas in Columbia.

The signing of the strategic cooperation and three more Y-12E order will deepen the cooperation between China and Columbia in the field of civil aviation industry.

The camo Y12 for airborne fits, in the US the US Army maintains the C23 Sherpa for Airborne use. Its less expensive to do small number drops from such planes then larger full transports. The smaller birds can be more easily kept in house by the unit and are cheaper to maintain, train on and with then a full sized transport belonging to another service that requires more extensive maintenance and could at any moment be reassigned to have the duties leaving your troops pounding sand when it comes time to dive train. Also if the PLA operate a Parachute Demonstration team it would be much easier for them to tour with a twin engine like that then a full Y9
