Which is an Obfuscation.
Lenovo is hardly getting a sweetheart deal from this. And just before the 2016 Elections Lenovo was named by a US DOD report as a possible national security risk.

A warning by a military but no mandate by government

How does that affect its business??
I am not even talking about individual consumers.
Lenovo is most used Chinese systems by US institutions by far.

Lenovo is a little different than ZTE or Hauwei. Lenovo manufactures some products in the US and Mexico.
About 31% of the company is outside of the PRC. Not just research centers but manufacturing and systems over site.

A big part of it is also cultural rather than rational. Lenovo is still seen by many in IT as a "rebrand" of IBM devices. Even though it's now completely separate, it's still perceived that way by many, and as so it's a "western" brand in the way that Huawei would never be, even if they designed and manufactured some devices in the west. Lenovo has gone a long way to keep a western brand image, even keeping the name of products the same as under IBM and following IBM style traditions on the more corporate orientated products.

The corporate orientated ThinkPad laptops are still very widely used in US government circles, and are even shown off quite prominently by NASA crews on the International Space Station - yet at the same time, having a Huawei phone is practically heresy

FWIW, it's got a Chinese Huawei phone to replace my equally Chinese "Blackberry" (actually designed and manufactured by TCL of Huizhou), and all the Google services still work fine. I'd be more worried about the blatant spying Google does through their cloud services (Hey google, please stop trawling through my Google Drive and telling me I pirated videos that I actually frikkin *OWN*) rather than any hypothetical backdoor in the firmware.

Lenovo is such a chameleon that Chinese themselves don't even know (or has forgotten) that it was a Chinese company. Formerly Legend Computers. Lenovo is Legend + Novo, which is Latin for new. Because of "Don't buy American, Buy Chinese" mentality with patriotic Chinese consumers, Lenovo went out of its way with its Chinese marketing campaign to remind Chinese consumers that its a Chinese company.

Let's see how well they did on Single's Day.

I think they fell out of favor with some local Chinese customers after it was discovered Lenovo charged higher prices for them compared to American customers.

Lenovo is too deeply intwined with US companies IMHO. Too many of them rely on former IBM architecture.

Ironic because if I were the MSS, that’s where I would put my backdoors, as opposed to a smartphone mainly designed as status symbol/for power users and hardly used by many enemy domestic companies/govt agencies for business.

My next laptop will be a Lenovo, likely the X1 Carbon series. Those things are sweet, and very nice keyboards, battery life, portability, and build quality. Plus, I want to contribute to Chinese companies.

I use the X1 Extreme, one of the best laptops out there.
