I thought primary and secondary education was compulsory up to Year 10? In 2011, NSW's Board of Studies even made it compulsory up to Year 12.

Nope I lived in rural NZ. My brothers and sisters went to boarding school while l chose to be free ranged(home schooled) because the time it would have taken me to walk to the closest school, it would have been time to start walking home again. I had a horse but it died.
My father was a geophysicist before taking over grandfather and uncles farm, and because of his efforts in teaching me, I obtained university standard levels in Physics Maths Geography which was good enough for me to apply for aircrew training in either the RAAF or AAAvn.
I wanted to apply for the Australian Armed services rather than the NZ one because they had better gear.

Mhmm... the tyranny of distance. Hopefully with increasing proliferation of modern telecommunications, cases like yours can be mitigated, and I hear NZ is investing properly into that sector with the adoption of FTTP NBN unlike Aus over here where FTTN NBN somehow gets slower speeds than copper.

So you can be sure of my accent even without meeting me or speaking with me? The only info that you have on me is my age when I came to the US. And that is enough for you to make such conclusive statement?

Age is important but is not everything. I know a guy who came to the US when he was 6 but still carries heavy accent now (he is 45). He can speak English very fluently but still can't lose his accent.

I also know people who can speak perfect American English without even spending a single day in the US. I actually know 3 people who can do that, one girl from Mainland China, one guy from Taiwan and another guy from Switzerland.

To judge someone's language skill, you at least need to speak with him, yes? That's called being fair. And you are not in position to judge me.

I can't stop but laugh... You can assure me how I speak English without even meeting me and/or speaking with me?

It would be a complete failure on my part that I still need to "get closer to Chinese grammar" when I speak English...

You do realize that you are learning a foreign language in your home country, while I had to learn English in the US? To you, it's a hobby. To me, it's necessity. I hope you appreciate the difference.

I sincerely hope that you give others more credit when you try to judge them. I've spent most part of my life around foreigners, both when I was in China and when I came to the States. You don't think I understand the difference between foreign accent and ethnic accent? You don't think that I can tell the difference between an African American and an Italian American or an Irish American?

I find this sentence hilarious. How do you know that I "cannot understand"? Did I mention anywhere that human doesn't need tongue to speak? So in your mind, I am so stupid that, even after speaking a second language for over 26 years, I have no clue what the tongue is for? Didn't I say in my last post that I spent a lot of time correcting my tongue movement?

I will stop here. I don't need someone on a military forum, whom I've never met, to tell me how good my English is. You are welcome to insist on my "heavy Chinese accent". And while you are at it, you are also welcome to believe that I am dumb as rock. This is my last post on this matter.
I think you are guessing I have never been to the USA, but you are wrong, for starters, my family is from Chihuahua Mex, So my Grandmother was born in El Paso/Ciudad Juarez so my family`s presence in the USA goes back to 1890, since my Grandmother`s Family became Americans, i can tell my mother had Uncles, Cousins, Brothers in law who fought in WWI (in France), WWII (Pacific), Korean war in the US armed forces; Me well I have cousins who have been stationed in Germany, Japan, South Korea by the US army, and recently i have a nephew who is going USA Navy.

Do i need to meet you to know you have an accent? No i do not, The 5 years old limit is physiological, i did not make up. However I can guess you have a decent English with maybe very little accent but I am sure you are unwilling to accept you do have an accent since you said you were bullied

However once you learn a language below 5 years old, your brain and tongue get wired to your native tongue, thus any person after that age will develop an accent, in fact some linguists say babies in the wound already get train their ears to their future tongues in the womb.

Why there are accents? do you know why?

Well the main reasons are:

Fashion, it means people change intonation to get a social status thus Isolation will develop a particular trend and fashion in an area.
(this can develop in Gender related accent, or social class accents)

The other reason well is what ethnic groups join a group of Speakers, to give you an example, in Mexico the original Spanish from Spain, mixed with the phonetics of native American speakers.

In Cuba, the African slaves mixed the Phonetics of their original languages into the Southern Spanish phonetics.

In Argentina, The original Spanish of the Spanish garrisons was blended with the mostly exclusive Italian immigrants that arrived arrived in Argentina in the period between 1890s-1930s.

There are ethnic groups that have a particular accent even if they are native Speakers in Mexico, people who are ethnically native american have a particular accent, same is African Americans in the USA.

Thus you dislike it or not you have an accent by the way, I have lived in New Zealand and Canada too, and I have family in Texas. I tell this because even my American Family who were born in the USA have a Latino Accent even if they live in California or Wisconsin.

Why in the hell are you still typing in English? Yes, because this is an English language forum. You know that. Do we need French here? Not by a long shot.

Isn't it reasonable and logical to behave and act like you are in an English language environment here and expect others to do the same? I would reasonably expect actively posting members at least as a courtesy to make an effort to improve , especially given the ample amount of time actively posting here.

If your emotion doesn't agree with the facts, that would be beyond anyone's control or responsibility to rectify it. I therefore don't see any further compelling reason to continue this rather pointless back and forth.
If you really wanted to help him, you will send him a private message asking him what did he meant, but you want to be mean and ridicule him in public, however you can not hide you can not Speak french is the level perhaps even he speaks English, i guess you have even no French skills but still you demand from him a perfect English

In NZ, apart from Southland which is where I live, there are no regional accents in speaking English. However one can pick out a Southlander by the way we speak is because of the way we pronounce our R's.
I have noticed a large percentage of native English speakers develop an American accent event after a relatively short period eg 1yr. I put that down to people in the younger age group think it's cool to have an American accent, although folks with a strong Scottish accent, rarely pick up an American accent.

My written English is not very good in a gramatical sense because I never went to school until I was fifteen, and that was only after I had expressed an interest in enlisting in the RAAF.
I lived in New Zealand in Christchurch, I can tell you they have a Strong accent, i have been to Wellington to, New Zealanders have a strong reminiscent British accent developing now a particular style due to immigrants from Asia and the Local Maoris, but most white people have a strong British accent still with of course their native particularities.

With a settlement of 5 families I don't expect to see fibre happening soon.At the moment our only choice is satellite or dial up modem.
We have a stretch of road where for about 10kms there is no reception for anything. However there was a time when driving along this stretch of road I picked up Southland Christian Radio. Brat would say this was because of "Divine Intervention"

This thread is just a continuation of arguments that have been going n now for weeks.

As a Super Moderator here I am not going to tolerate it any more.

99% of these issues would be completely solved if you people on both sides of this issue simply grew up and ignored the people you either disagree with, or feel you cannot understand.

QUIT FLOODING THE FORUM WITH YOUR INCESSANT BACK AND FORTH ON HOW WELL FORBIN SPEAKS OR DOES NOT SPEAK ENGLISH.

He posts some good stuff, and those who take the time to follow his links, or try to understand him either by simply asking or PM'ing him, can get at what his meaning is.

On the other hand, it has now reached the point where Forbin is lashing out and attacking the people who have been attacking him. I have asked him to do the same...ignore the people who are doing it.

He was warned the other day because he did not do so.

So here is the deal. The few members who love to attack Forbin, and Forbin now attacking back MUST STOP.

Ignore one another and let it go.

I am going to delete every time I see such nonsense in the future from either side.

If it continues and I have to spend too much time doing so, then I will get with the Forum Administrator and we wil suspend the offenders.

...so you might as well ignore one another in any case.

The answer in every case, sense it has reached this rediculous stage is going to be for you t ignore one another and get on with life and posting of Defense Related issues here on SD, and not attacking a member over his English, or that poster responding in kind.

So:

@antiterror13 @jobjed @FORBIN @Jura @latenlazy @Equation

I would suggest each of you take this to heart. I would recommend that those of you who have such issues with Forbin ignore him, and that Forbin, you ignore those who you have such issues with.

Any further negative interaction between any of you is simply going to be deleted as I can get on the forum and check it out.
