Yup! They need a big allies like China to survive. How can it be independence?

What did them in is the collapse of soviet union. they lost their chief trading partner and benefactor.
Now they are trying to suck on the tities of CHina, albert unwillingly, prefer just cut them a check and be left along.

a SK with out aid flow and Markets and technology provided by US and to some degree Japan the 1970s-80s economic miracle wouldn't happen.

independence... and starvation, hmm tough choice :p

the South is independent by any definition and has presented the face of Korean people to the world better than most country on earth can try and imagine

By any definition except perhaps the most important one, ie the command of your own military.
Sure NK is poorer than SK but would be good to have more independent sources of the real degree of starvation in NK other than the western and SK media. We all know how 'reliable' these bunch are.
Remember also that SK was for many decades after WW2 a military dictatorship who was no less brutal to dissents than NK. There were also entire neighborhoods, some up til today, where most of the women's jobs are to 'serve' the foreign troops.
So while SK is definitely richer now, I think the degree to which it is better off than NK in the post WW2 period has been exaggerated.

There is no denying that NK was better off than South Korea during the 60s and 70s. Hell a lot of Chinese tried to illegally crossover (ironic, isn't it) into NK during the Cultural Revolution. We have to remember, however, that the NK was better off due to Soviet support. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the NK model ceased working.

What I find ironic is that after decades of vilifying Kim Jong Il and "pondering" (i.e. calling for) his assassination, the media in the West is suddenly sounding mighty unsure of themselves. Perhaps the most nervous is South Korea. If a succession war breaks out in NK, there will surely be tons of refugees fleeing to the South. Even if things transition smoothly, the new NK leader (most likely Kim Jong Un) might decide to make some statements with the military.

There is no good way out of this mess really.

Best case scenario is for some north korean faction that is distant from kim's clan to stage a palace coup. and slowly ease the society into something else.

I am afraid the time and space to ease the society out is very limited.

looks like a eventual humanitarian desaster in all eventualities. not to even mention a mass psycological disaster.

Before we go breaking out the champagne and cavare left overs from the death of OBL. Lets Take a moment and hope Pray if need be that this will mean a better future as new leadership takes over and institutes needed reforms and peaceful cooperation as opposed too more of the same or worse war beginning inside the Nk boarders and spreading across too it's neighbors.
