Re: JH-7/JH-7A Thread

Any info on the possible new variant of the JH-7 possibly the JH-7B? Increase payload from 6.5 tonnes to 8 tonnes as the JH-7 had 5 tonne payload while the improved JH-7A had 6.5 tonne payload leading to a 1.5 tonne payload increase. So 6.5 tonne to 8 tonne for the JH-7B maybe?

Well, JH-7 can probably carry 8 tonnes right now, it's combat radius just would not be 1650 km under that situation. I can speculate on what changes will be applied in a new variant, but we won't know until it comes out.

You mean the standard JH-7 the first one? Not the second one the JH-7A? Really i never knew the JH-7 (not the A) could carry 8 tonnes i thought it carried 5 tonnes. Do you have any info to back this claim

I mean JH-7A, not JH-7. My point is that the payload is given for the stated combat radius. So theoretically, the airframe can probably handle more at shorter range.

If those schemes with various loadouts can be trusted, innermost pylon can carry in excess of 1,5 tons (6 250 kg bombs), middle pylon in excess of 1 ton, outer plyon can carry one cluster bomb large enough to be 0.5 tons and wingtip can surely carry 150 kg if not more. When we add the belly pylon and two small pylons in front of that, I would say we're looking at 7 tons easely, perhaps even 7,5 tons.

Maybe, for longer ranged missions. Seems to have a good endurance, range and loiter.

But I would pick the J-8II instead for its speed and high altitude performance.

If in a war time situation you are undergoing reconassiance in hostile area and are being attacked by fighters, wouldn't you need an aircraft that can actually have a fighting chance of surviving? Taking classified photo's you would want to get them back to HQ and if you were in a J-8II you would be shot down easily. Maybe the J-10 or flankers would be a better reconassiance aircraft. Questions why isn't their a J-10 or flanker reconassiance or photo taking aircraft anyway in the PLAAF inventory?

For a recon jet your not supposed to fight. You're supposed to run. A plane like the J-8II is built for running.

reality is,PLAAF/PLAN naval air arm need something better than JH-7 and J-8-3. both aircraft are obselete.
there's been rumor of twin engine J-10,could it be that PLAN is looking for a replacement for JH-7?
