But is this really CONFIRMED?

I read they were interested in purchasing them, later there was a report they "ordered indeed something" but as far as I know it was never specifically mentioning the JF-17:

A rough translation seems to say "We signed a contract with a Pakistani company to purchase aircraft capable of facing the marches." allegedly meant they are looking for a cheap fighter against UAVs:

via the Iraqi Defense Minister Jumaa Inad in a private_interview with Al-Arabiya.

And in retrospect, this gentleman already "confirmed" the purchase of Rafales by Iraq!
another Qatar situation.

anway rafale is medium weight fighter and jf17 light weight fighter, they aren't mutually exclusive

Would have been more preferable to directly buy the J10 instead to strengthen Sino-Iranian cooperation
for Iran the calculus would be different. one they would not buy fighter jets from pakistan and pakistan would not sell. two they need heavier fighters more than medium ones. a small number of medium ones would be useful but I think they'd prefer to build those themselves. given Iran's potential enemies, it makes more sense to deploy heavier fighters deep in the north and north east as to avoid being easily destroyed by american/israeli airstrikes, while still maintain enough range to cover its entire airspace. something like Su-27/30/35/57 makes more sense.

Yeah, even prospective, I wouldn't give too much hope on them because they might turn out to be talk more than do. Especially Iraq, I don't see why they would buy Chinese weapon at all.

In the case of Argentina it is almost a confirmed deal at this point. Why the pessimism?

Also in the case of Iraq it is their defense minister who came out and stated the deal, not Chinese or Pakistanis tabloid. If you want to blame someone for the rumor then blame him.

Exactly what I did ... I blame him as unreliable, he already noted, Iraq had purchased Rafales, so if that was wrong, why should we believe in this recent statement especially since no credible Chinese or Pakistani source conforms it?

Again, no-one wants to down-rate the JF-17, but there are TOO many stupid politicians out there claiming whatever only to gain attention ... exactly like the Argentinian deal, which so far officially is not concluded yet.

Sorry, but therefore there are many reasons that justify this pessimism.

When did Iraq buy Rafale?

For Chronology:

The first claim actually came from Pakistan, but was questioned by JANES because there was no Iraqi confirmation:

Now, we have the confirmation from Iraq's defense minister:

But I get the skepticism, because the Iraqi defense minister also confirmed the Rafale, which may have been premature:

Either way, it seems like the probability of a Thunder sale to Iraq is fairly high now, like 85%. We'll probably get further confirmations soon if it gets greenlit.
