JF-17 Presses On After News of Egypt's Plans

ISLAMABAD — News that Egypt may acquire the UAE's Mirage fighters is likely to scupper Pakistan's hopes of selling the JF-17, especially since Cairo is also reportedly negotiating for 20 Rafale fighters, and shown interest in the MiG-35. However, brisk development of the JF-17 continues alongside sales efforts.

Kaiser Tufail, former Pakistani air commodore, said the UAE's offer of an undisclosed number of Dassault-built Mirage 2000-9s to Egypt means the JF-17 may be out of contention in Cairo.

"If [Egypt] purchases Mirage 2000-9s as well as some more of the older refurbished 2000-5s, it would certainly not need the JF-17, which is less capable than the French fighter," he said.

I hate to be a party pooper but we have to remember that the JF-17 is a low end product with technology transfer being a sweetener only for a very limited subset of potential customers. Buyers of low end big ticket military items usually don't have the money or political will to develop a domestic military industrial base. And other arms exporters usually can offer more political and military sweeteners, and as much economic sweeteners, on the side as China can. Just as on the flip side they can have more strings attached.

I truly believe that is the case. Thank for verbalizing what I failed to put into words.

Why this obsession about making exports ? The JF-17 Thunder has already served its main purposes. Which is to provide the PAF with an affordable replacement for its large fleet of Mirage III, Mirage 5, Chengdu J-7 and Nanchang Q-5's. And also to give Pakistan's aerospace industry a shot in the arm and push it to a new plateau. Export should be a extra that comes with it. But now at least on the internet it has become the main issue.

What happened to the JF-17 Thunder's max speed it use to be mach 1,8 but now that has changed to mach 1,6. I mean is that all the JF-17 can do mach 1,6 ? I thought it can do mach 1,8 with the DSI.

Success comes to those who work hard and are not content with just 50%. It's what separates the winners from the losers!

JF-17 serves as a cheap, high bang-for-the-buck aircraft that is decently sophisticated and doesn't contain any overly sensitive technologies, so why not sell it too? 2 birds with 1 stone. I wouldn't call any of this an obsession at all; Rafale sales are an obsession. Sales aren't the lifeline of the aircraft but won't hinder development so why not dedicate a sales team for it? You're not pulling engineers off work to try to sell it. It's not that expensive to set up a sales department and if it sells, it could serve as a confidence booster for future Chinese exports.

Why the obsession about making exports? How about millions and millions of dollars! Not only can Pakistan stand to make a ton of money directly via exports, they can also make future procurement of the JF-17 cheaper due to expanded economy of scale.

...and there may be other buyers, which just furthers the economies of scale.

Pakistan may well not be the only customer who purchases and deploys the JF-17 when all is said and done.

Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, Nigeria, Sudan, and others are all potential customers. Pakistan will have at least 150 aircraft, and these others could add another 100+ aircraft...depending on who buys.
