In January 2019, it was reported in Taiwanese media that a Taiwanese submarine officer said that the new submarine may be something like a small version of the Soryu-submarine.

The mentioned Taiwanese officer also uploaded these images. The basic shape resembles Soryu.

Taipei can't afford Japanese SSKs (not to mention that they don't provide domestic pork for electoral purposes).

Not to mention that Mitsubishi and Kawasaki have very big exposures to the Mainland market.

Soryu sub is too big for Taiwanese needs. But it's not about selling a whole sub like in the case with Australia. It's about providing Taiwan technical support in Taiwan's submarine develop program.

Yeah, the risk to Mitsubishi and Kawasaki is obvious. It was mentioned in the article linked below. In order to help Taiwan in some way, they went with retired experts and communication was done via 3rd country through point. I guess it worked for that moment.

From the media reports, the ROCN SSK program is asking for something ridiculously large (around 3,000 tons full displacement)

That would make them comparable in size to the Hai Lung (Zwaardvis) class that ROC has been operating, a hull based on the American Barbel class design from the 1950s.
The Zwaardvis is already too big for any sort of ROCN need (what are they going to do with all that range? Just go get a smaller sub and install batteries/AIP for seabed loitering instead). It goes into the idiot ball territory when the replacement 40 years later is also the same size.

An intelligent person would have asked for 1,500 ton subs in the style of the Type 214 or Agosta.

Guys, this is a thread about the JSDF. There's a thread for Taiwan including the submarine project - no reason to post here. Japanese assistance with the project isn't a government-level contract, so it's got relatively little to do with Japan. It would be like posting about the Hunter-class frigates in the UK Royal Navy thread because they're a variant of the Type 26.

Well, Japan was a country where military exports has been extremely restricted. So for Japan to take an action as far as providing technical assistance to Taiwan says something about the posture of Japan's willingness to export military technology. If reading between the lines, it sort of implies that Taiwan would fall under Japan's reinterpretation of its constitution which includes the trait of "collective self-defense" in which Japan can go in the defense of not only itself but also in the defense of other other countries if deemed as having an impact on Japan's security. Losing Taiwan to CCP PRC would certainly raise the security stakes to Japan since it would give the PRC Navy much easier access into the open Pacific and thus much more exposure risk to Japan's under side, not to mention Taiwan has high favirbility to Taiwan and like minded by both being democratic. Certainly the topic of Japanese sub experts going to Taiwan is also a Taiwan defense matter and thus suitable for a Taiwan thread. But it's not one or the other. It's an overlap. Thus either or is suitable. It being on "unofficial" capacity is irrelevent and just sounds like pandering to Pro-CCP propagandist. Maybe someone will caution the Pro-CCP posters in the Taiwan thread in the strategy section about falsly framing as something else and caution agaisnt making a "jap" hate post? That certainly was not related matter to that Taiwan thread. Seeing that SamuraiBlue gave a like to your post shows that he's been "harmonized" to some degree.
