Yes...the Atagos are marvelous AEGIS vessels (and now the JMSDF is going to build two more of them):

...here's an Atago (foreground) sailing with a Kongo (behind and forward). The Atago has a helicopter hanger.

...and comparing the Atago class to the Burke Flight IIA, there's my models of each:

Don't forget that JS Kongo was comissioned only two years after USS Arleigh Burke and launched only few months after USS Barry. It's been over 20 years ago but many users here might not recognise that fact because they were toddlers at the time or not even born and are now fascinated by the Chinese power-up which they wouldn't care in the 90's or early 2000's.

Yes, as I said above, " It is seen there to have many of the same sensors as the Akizuki DDGs."

I believe the Akizukis have the FCS-3A system, yes?
Yes but if you look at the Akizuki class closely you'll find two separate radar arrays side by side the bigger one for the C band and the smaller for the X band.
The new FCS-3A now being tested on the Asuka had combined the two separate arrays into one.

Excellent! Thanks for pointing out that distinction.

So that is one of the FCS-3A improvements.

Is it as powerful? Is it scalable?

I ask because I wonder if it can be retrofitted back to the Akizuki, Hyuga, and Izumo classes?

Don't know the details since not much information is provided. I do believe the integration reduced a lot of wiring and probably sharing many other components reducing electrical needs.
Hmmm...in that case, if it is capable of being as powerful as the existing FCS-3 systems on those other classes, I would not be surprised to see them retrofitted back onto them.

If they can perform equally, or better, it would only make sense.
