Japan Earthquake

Theres nothing people can do at the moment of the earthquake, other than just hide under your table and pray for the best. It all comes down to the construction of the building. Would've those kids have died if there were proper steel wire reinforcement in the concrete? How come the government building didn't collapse? How come no major shopping malls collapsed? How come majority of the people that died were inside either schools or residential homes? Because those buildings were not constructed when overseeing by possible future tenants, whereas the commercial buildings are constantly monitored by its company personnels and the government building built with over the top quality standards, using tax payers money. I can guarantee that the city hall in Wenchuan would be the last building to collapse.
On the other hand, the pool of funds for construction of school buildings are just another gold mine officials can get their hand into.

At the risk of derailing the thread, I have to say that this line of reasoning is a typical "hindsight is 20/20". Obviously in any city, there will be levels of wealth. Some buildings will be constructed of higher quality while others are constructed of lower quality, depending on how much the builders were willing to spend.

In fact, this research paper:

A field damage survey of 1,005 buildings damaged by the Wenchuan Earthquake in Dujiangyan City was carried out and the resulting data was analyzed using the statistical method. It is shown that buildings that were seismically designed achieved the desired seismic fortifi cation target; they sustained less damage than the non-seismically designed buildings. Among the seismically designed buildings investigated, RC frame buildings performed the best in terms of seismic resistance. Masonry buildings with a ground story of RC frame structure were the second best, and masonry buildings performed the worst. Considering building height, multistory buildings sustained more severe damage than high-rise buildings and 2-and 3-story buildings. Compared to residential buildings, public buildings, such as schools and hospitals, suffered more severe damage.

contradicts your claim that residential homes were less safe than public buildings.

The fact that some public buildings were better built than other public buildings is not proof of anything. Why would government official buildings be held to a higher standard than schools and hospitals? They are equally as susceptible to corruption and cut-backs as any other public building. If anything, the higher budget of those buildings make them an even more tempting target for corruption. After all, how many top officials actually supervise the construction of their work place, or even cares, for that matter??

If you had a corrupt official, what do you think he's going to think:

1- Oh I work at that building, better build it to withstand earthquake, you never know!
2- Hey, I can pocket 3 Million Yuan if we cut this corner, and nobody will ever notice!

It simply doesn't make sense to claim that corruption was the reason behind school collapses, when the far more obvious reason is simply unequal wealth distribution.

And just to prevent this from derailing further, this will be my only post on this subject.

That GIANT wall of water would make me pee my pants and I'm not one to be easily scared! Prayers definitely goes out to those folks in Japan!! I hope out servicemen there are ok also.

Also for those of us geeks here this is a chart demonstrating the incredible energy unleashed.

I saw on FOX news that the USN has already been asked for help. When the photos go up I'll post them!

According to Japan's own news:

~50 nations (...or did they say groups? not sure what term they used) including USA, UK, France, South Korea, and the PRC all claimed to be ready to help. The question is when and/or which the Japanese government will be 'ready to accept' (give the green light).

As pops related to from a source I usually stay away from, the USA is already sending several ships over to Japan, including one carrier I cannot remember by name... sorry...

I have no heard much update other than that - they cover the damage mostly and a few clips of helicopter rescues (JSDF).

I've been watching news about the earthquake constantly for the last few hours, now one of the dangers are the nuclear power plants operating in the area, some have more than 1000 times normal levels of radiation. My thoughts are with the nation of Japan during this horrible time, but at least the tsunamis warnings have been overblown and to my knowledge there haven't been any destructive tsunamis.

I was watching on TV the tsunami live when it was happening from those helicopter shots. That was frightening just seeing it on TV because you could see people on foot or in their car and even though they were evacuating they couldn't see the wave coming in rushing up behind them.

Many many hearty condolences and prayers for my poor Japanese friends from India. I remember the moment when these ghost waves hit my place Kerala, south end state of India erupting from Indonesia in 2006.

Dont worry our Indian crew has already offered help to Japan for all support and relief operations. We people are one and have only one mind whenever disasters happen to any part ofearth.

Out of 25000 Indians in Japan, i know many people from here who are either studying or working in Tokyo. Many Japanese tourists were here recently. I am seeing only Japanese news here in media's after earthquake.

Hope every one is safe and sound. Prayers to God for no more nature plays.

Our PM has offered all aid, help and assistance to Japan.

A Japanese lady professor named Takaku who also speaks "malayalam" language of our place Kerala, southend state of India yesterday came in our local news TV channel to describe about this earthquake and her relatives and friends in Japan. She said she couldnt contact anyone and noone is taking any call there in Japan. Her home is in Sendai or Miyagi.

I think Japan already greenlighted the U.S. and South Korea.

About the future: Did this quake reduce or increase the stress that will someday cause a quake near Tokyo?
