Japan Alarmed As Cost Of Missile Defense System With US Triples: Report

Tokyo: The United States has told Japan it would cost nearly three times more than previously estimated to develop a joint missile defense system against a possible attack by North Korea, a report said Sunday.

The Japanese government may try to renegotiate its contribution to the next-generation project, now estimated to cost a total of three billion dollars, the Yomiuri Shimbun said.

Japan's defense spending has been curtailed for three straight years up to March 2006 as Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi advocated an austere budget.

Washington's initial estimate saw the United States shouldering 545 million dollars until the fiscal year to March 2012 with work on the project starting in fiscal 2006, the Yomiuri said.

But the amount nearly tripled after Washington extended the period for development to 2014 and recalculated the amount based on previous weaponry projects, the mass-circulation daily said.

The paper said some members of the Japanese government have voiced concern over the latest estimate.

Japan expects the cost of maintaining the current missile defense system, which is scheduled to begin deployment in late fiscal 2006, to total 800 billion yen to one trillion yen (7.2-8.9 billion dollars), it said.

The paper quoted an anonymous defense agency official as indicating the US financial contribution should be examined carefully.

"It's possible that the US estimate includes experiments that are much larger in terms of scale than Japan needs," the official was quoted as saying.

Japan has been in a hurry to build up a missile defense system with the United States since North Korea stunned the world in 1998 by firing a missile over the Japanese mainland into the Pacific.

9 billion dollars is well worth the price, especially for a nation as wealthy as Japan. A single nuclear warhead could do 3-5 trillion dollars worth of damage to a modern city.

Japan has a GDP of over 4 trillion dollars and spends only 1% of its GDP on defense, a quite small figure. No way could any expenditure of a mere 9 billion hurt its economy. Japan could print out that much money in cash, and then burn it in a trench as an obstacle to enemy infantry and it would still be just fine.

The truth behind the news:Japan knows it dosent NEED a missile shiled! China is not going to attack Japan without American forces in Japans soil, wich the Japanese dosent want there either! Japan dosent want "Pax Americana" They want THERE OWN strong Navy once again, and they WILL have it, in this VERY dirty game of a "new cold war" in the pacific! The US and China are not the only palyers of this game! The Americans dont understand how much the world truly hates them! Japans is just buying the and waiting for the right moment. In the end this is going to get DIRTY:nono:

the japanese econmy isnt doing so well, have u been under a rock for the last 15 years? printing money wioll cause rapid inflation. the jap constitution forbids spending more than 1% because because japan is supposedly a defesive nation. it still spends 45 bil, a huge amount.

henry, the kaigun is considered the second most powerful defensive navy on earth, with 140 modern, state of art warships. the only reason that america is better is because it has more ships and has carriers. if japna built a huger navy, then it would be seen as an offensive fleet.

Heh! And so? What are the Americans going to do about it? Getting "tough" on Japan would probobly mean an Sino-Japanse alliance, and they cant risk that! So, as you see, this isnt going to be so easy as you thought! Like i said, the world truly is allready sick and tired of American dominance, and unless America wants "everybody vs US" scenario there going to have to change there arrogant attitude towards the rest of the world! China is a rising power, and soon will also be Japan and India! The US simply has to start living with this matter, and not go "crazy" like some Americans apparently already have:(
