I have a feeling that the future three muskateers of PLAAF would be J16, J20 and J35A. J10A/B/C would slowly fade away from first line of defense as they aged over the years, taking over by J35A. Of course it is not happening now, but 2030 is not too far away.

Equally interesting is that in these formations, the spearhead flanker is always the "D" version. Even here its leading the 5th gens. EW planes seem to have quite the standing in PLAAF/PLANAF's eyes. This is why I am of the opinion that we might soon see a dedicated 5th gen EW variant.

J-10A/Bs have already almost all been reallocated to 2nd-line units. Only 4x combat ABs still use them, namely the 43rd/70th/124th (J-10A) and the 61st (J-10B).

The main 2nd-line units that have received surplus J-10A/Bs are the following:
  • 20th (training) Air Regiment of the CTC
  • 53rd (training) Air Regiment of the STC
  • 94th (training) Air Regiment of the NTC
Altogether, these 3x ARs have a combined total of ~150x J-10A/B/S.

The PLAAF should have a new "Four Musketeers" in the 2030s and beyond to succeed the current "Four Musketeers", namely the J-20/A/S, J-35A, J-36 and J-XDS.

Or perhaps there could be the "Five Musketeers of the PLAAF" if the J-16 is also counted in.
