Err, if the PLAAF does have significantly different stealth requirements, what does that exactly have to do with J-20 being a delta canard?
The J-20 is obviously schedualed for a supercruise engine (WS-15) comparable to the F119's of the F-22, so they don't really need a super-awesome airframe to compensate or anything. And it's not like there are any proven advantages of delta canards over conventional layouts (that we know of).

I agree with your third point whole heartedly though; CAC is more experienced with delta canards (J-10, and to a lesser extent, J-9) and that is probably the main reason PLAAF is going with it instead of the Americans or Russians, who have went conventional (some of the ATF proposals were originally delta canards, and I believe the USAF decided to choose a "less radical" route, for them. For the PLAAF of course, delta canards are the more mature, more known path)

wouldn't be be funny if J-XX ended up a forward swept wing design with STOVL?
totally blows everyone out of the water with prediction... in a good way

If that were the case I think the toughest of China critics will have a hard time finding a plane that China ripped off of.

Well they obviously would've taken a tech transfer from sukhoi from the Su-47, and STOVL would've come from the supposed Chinese hacking of sensitive F-35 documents -- but there probably would be Yakolev help in developing STOVL technology as well, because any new technology must be russian or american. DSI probably came from the F-35 hack as well :D :D

Off topic, looks like the USAF has started looking for their next gen of fighters:

Supposedly it'll be designed to counter foes with A2/AD, advanced missile systems, cyber attack capability (i.e.: China >_> ). I must say the trajectory seems similar to the request for the ATF in the early eighties, sigh. Looks like it'll be another two decades until China can match whatever the US comes up with : /

Given what the budget looks like and the lack of impending needs and crises, I have some doubts as to whether the US can move up a generation in 30 years. Chances are a lot of concepts will be developed then scrapped, with the benefits of the research incorporated into upgrading 5th generation designs.

Re: New Generation Fighter

I think there is a rivalry going on between CAC and SAC judging from what I read on Chinese forums.

Not to the extent as Boeing vs. Lockhead Martin though, because they are both under AVIC. Which also means, even if SAC had lost the new gen. fighter contract from the customer i.e. PLAAF, AVIC would give them something else to work on, none of them gets driven out of business the way their western counterparts might end up with, therefore the "rivalry" can't be that serious.

When the PLAAF starts inducting Flying Saucers we'd have ripped off the Aliens... sigh.:coffee:
