Actually those are not Canards there just extra wing body you see the same thing on SU27 canard less variants And Fa/18's. Canards are less stealthy and stand out in terms of RCS.
the true secret too the Raptor and Pak fa's maneuverability is on the Foreword wing edge called a Leading edge extension if you look at your own photo this is the yellow area along the forward wing. In the Raptor it's a little different as the Raptors are are larger in terms of wing area and called chines. in either case the concept is almost the same as a canard. the difference is that where a Canard is a independent wing like structure, a Leading Edge extension or LEX is actually part of the wing. think of it like Slats on a airliner. LEX allow better performance at low speed, Where Chines Also Add additional lift at supersonic speeds.
In other Words Though LEX and Thrust vectoring you can gain the same super maneuverability.
Though Chines and Thrust vectoring you get super maneuverability plus a extra boost in high speed performance.

The Russian T-50 has canards. It has just extended the wings so they touch the canards. They are still there.

Canards + thrust vectoring = potential for unlimited angle of attack
Not really canards, more like movable LERX, most likely used to provide directional stability to compensate for the small vertical stabilisers.

Umm...a bit off topic here, but the F-22 does not have LEX or Chines...

They just are used for high AOA to get airflow sticked to upper wing. Not for agility in a2a combat... Landing is the most important moment for its use.

I do not believe that is the case, T-50 is less than half baked, it's just pieces Russians thrown together so they can have something flying, I wouldn't be surprised if it does not become ready by the time Chinese 4th gen enters service.

It's going to be a decent and much cheaper weapon to counter the F22. Don't count it out. The Chinese plane JXX will likely be equal if not better than it though. China has a lot more money to throw at the project than does Russia.

Maybe I'm crazy, but what do you guys think the chances of China actually displaying the plane publicly? I mean, Russia did. This is China's chance to show they have caught up and can play with the big boys. I think there will be a public showing, maybe I am optimistic though.

Remember, Gen. He already spilled the beans, there is no reason to pretend the plane does exist.
