On one CCTV interview with a PLAN officer, he claim the new fighter if exists will fight along side UAVS, he claims the tactics is CHINA's own and a first.

BTW don't you ppl learn. The west said China can't do this and that, China just keep quiet they roll out what ever that can't be done onto the show floor then watch them sweat.

Did anyone here consider the possibility that the J-20 already flew in secret? I mean why be so open about it if you aren't even sure that the plane could take off or not.

but they did high speed taxi run for at least 50 round, this is hard job for the pilot, and the plane may worn out, the J-20 prototype is very expensive, if J-20 after taxi test secret flight in CAC, that maybe possible, I don' believe some body said J-20 already flew test before it come to CAC,this is too boring, because there are too many professionals involved, as well as pilots, how to convince them? so many leaders, will have different views.
I think Jan,6th and 7th the weather is no good,of cause J-20 maybe secrect test flight in next days.
I read the chinese bbs many people said that the CAC staff admitted that day ( Jan,6,7) J-20 would test flight.

Yes, definitely two different engines/aircrafts.

Note the details about the nozzle, for the darker nozzle (AL-31F?), there are only one cycle of "zigzag" around the nozzle, meanwhile, for lighter nozzle(WS-10G? or WS-15 prototype?), there are two layers of "zigzag" around the nozzles.

Its really surprised for me to see they have made most likely two prototypes, each with different jet engines.

It is not something that have never done before that prototype aircrafts with different jet engines, for instance, Russian's T-10, get prototypes with AL-31F prototypes and these with more matured AL-21F engines, however, this is done after T-10's maiden flight.

Its quite surprised to see that they get this done at such early stage (e.g. before maiden flight), which suggesting:

(1) They are very well funded.
(2) They really want to trade money for time.

So I would expect the flight-test stage for the fighter would be rather quick to finish, comparing to its peers.
I agree. The new domestic engine (FWS10A with a stealthy nozzle? WS-10G?) is not a matured platform. Testing a prototype with a new domestic engine introduces more unknowns. So they need a "known quantity" the AL-31F as a baseline -- to isolate the variables in a statistical sense.

I think the CMC is in a real rush to get J-20 to mass production. I think it's possible we might have the first J-20 regiment by the end of 2012. Could it be CMC anticipates a new US president might be more belligerent?

The new engine will need to be tested on the J-20 for at least a couple of years if not longer and I'm pretty sure they'll have to sort out some flaws and make improvements. On top of that, CAC devotes resources to other planes and projects as well.

50 rounds? That's quite a lot. I wonder if the wheels actually left the ground for a second or two.

My thought the same, though probably an unofficial flight only within CAC. Given PRC always play it safe, it can't bear to lose face when public showing flight without lowering the risk of failure as much as possible. If the 2009 military parade is any indication, there's prob already a well ahead planning before the official flight test for the public. Anyway, just my own opinion.

note: my conclusion came from someone who posted above about the new engine being delivered to CAC in Aug 2009 and the military general comment that progress has been going very smoothly as an indication.
