Re: New Generation Fighter

What if China never revealed or mass produced J-10 post-2006 but instead directly unveiled J-20 in 2010? Then China would go straight from J-7 to J-20!

Then China can claim it came from aliens and really shock the world.

That is not very realistic. I think 4th generation fighters are going to make up the bulk of most air forces for the next 20-30 years. The expense of maintaining a purely 5th generation fleet is going to be astronomical.

Well, Ilya Kramnik, the "RIA Novosti military commentator", certainly has thrown down the gauntlet. It seems unwise to make such "predictions" without accurate and thorough knowledge. Whether he has that, or not, ony time will tell.

Re: New Generation Fighter

One thing is for certain with the J20, and it is that it will not make a good carrier fighter (unless you fundamentally change the design to significantly shorten it, but you might as well design a new plane if you were going to do that).

This raises an interesting question about whether China will develop a F35 equivalent 5th gen fighter to bulk out its forces as well as give its future carriers something better than upgraded flankers. But I digress.

It is interesting looking at the side-on photos just how much length there is in the fuselage behind the rear landing gears. It looks long enough to comfortably fit a set of internal bays before and after the rear landing gear. Add in the underbelly bays and you are looking at an unprecedented internal weapons storage potential.

The only issue with aft weapons bays would be whether the engines would produce too much heat to make it unsafe to house weapons there.

Being Chinese, they probably would just use that space for extra fuel. If the Russians came up with this design, you can bet they would had added an extra pair of internal bays there. There is no word for 'overkill' in Russian you know. :p

I have had the feeling that China knows/has more than it is telling. This might be un-related and I might be altogether wrong:

CATIC: China's technology can help Russia to improve the RD-93 engine

Ma Zhiping, general manager, said during the Farnborough Air Show, China's technology can help the Russian-made RD93 engines to increase thrust, China hopes that the engine thrust to 9000 kg. He also said the RD93 is the first choice of Xiaolong, Russia agree to export all of the potential users of the State.

I'm thinking along similar lines PLA Wolf. Of course, as I've conjectured that the Black Silk Stocking could be used in anti-carrier strike, I chomping-at-the-bit to see the lengths of the main side weapons-bays. I'd have a heart-attack if there's a long central weapons-bay behind the nose landing gear and running the length of this monster, and I don't think I'd be the only one to do so.

I don't think there would be a long, central weapons bay -- there's simply not enough space. The T-50 has the space between the engines as their main weapons bay, but the J-20 (like the F-22) doesn't seem to have the internal volume. It will probably have an F-22-esque main weapons bay, but I'm curious if it will be "deeper".
