But there is also a red band running across it, whereas the picture only seems to show the star without the band.

I do believe the news we've heard is all true, but I'm suspicious towards these pictures we've been seeing... 70092, when you say "the first leaked one" do you mean the one above, or a different one which was deleted by censors (and subsequently not distributed around)?

The first (which is the one you saw the fighter through trees, which is leaked on 22/Dec) is leaked by a highly trustful guy (who also be the first guy to show a sneaky and very blur shot of J-10b, ironically, at that time almost all guys thought it was PSed) , all the rest are likely to be poorly PSed by attention whores.

He has been banned at CJDBY due to he is a pathetic attention seeking whore, hence in his poorly PSed pic, he bad mouths CJDBY.

Laterly, the mod of the BBS where he posted these pics figured it out that he is that pathetic joker.

Ok, I'll take you word for it. It's hard keeping track of what is real and what it not.

But the first picture released also clearly has something in the same position on the vertical stabilizer, but it is too blurry to establish what it is.

What bothers me is why does it have insignia at all? Has a prototype ever had the PLAAF symbol on it?

Don't know for sure, but it has also been confirmed by all other guys who have seen it.

There are two distinctive difference of this fighter, comparing to other prototype fighters in CAC/SAC:

1), The color of it is dark-deep-green, whilst all the rest prototype fighter are yellow-colored.

2), The fighter has a airforce symbol on it, confirmed by both eye witness and leaked high quality pics (still not avaialbe to BBS).

One possible explaination, this time, the PLA prefer to brand it to the world rather soon.

The PLA changed their style quite a bit later on, for example, see the newly leaked submarine.

But there is nothing speical that a Chinese fighter, whilst still in factory-trial test stage, has PLAAF symbol on it.

For example, see the first few J-10B prototype at CAC:
