I think you're referring to the small "ventral fins" which are clearly visible on the drawing and mentioned by most witnesses?
The first and second prototypes would be near identical -- from previous planes the first one seems to be the initial demonstrator/prototype while the second acts as the static/shakedown testbed.It looks a lot like YF-23 with canards.
It appears J-20 has side intakes and not an underbelly intake like the early Gaoshan CGs. But then, maybe that was an earlier concept of the J-20 that is less stealthy but maybe more agile than the J-20 prototype.
I wonder if 2001 and 2002 might be different!
