So this was the new equipment Yankeesama was talking about… Sheesh. China definitely demonstrated tremendous good will. Russia should at least have sent Su-35s.
It also shows tremendous confidence both in the J-20 as a mature platform and Russia as a military partner. The "reciprocating" gesture would have been Russia sending Su-57s, only I don't think sending prototypes is a thing. Sending Su-35s wouldn't really signal anything since China already has those.

The flankers were J-16 and J-11??? I thought those were Su-30SMs because the video was unclear…

Geez looks like PLAAF is sending the cream of the crop with this one…
A bit off OT, but not only did the PLAAF did that, but the PLAGF also sent some good stuff. Plus, the Russians are doing the ground portion of the exercise with Chinese equipment. This exercise is definitely different from before.

I think it is best if we keep expectations measured for the time being. According to ShiLao, China has very different exercise criteria and rubrics than Russia and in the past, joint exercises usually involve Chinese/Russian troops fighting shoulder to shoulder against a dedicated "OPFOR blue force" or a set of targets in the case of live fire exercises. I don't think we'll see J-20 or J-16 vs Su-30SM in simulated aerial combat engagements, at least not this one. Best case scenario would be J-20/J-16 and Su-30SM intercepting aerial target drones in a live fire scenario.

Russia doesn't have many operational Su-57's at all. It might scare a possible future Indian purchase if China got a close look.
