I think he's saying that David Axe is typically not "on top of things" (i.e.: up to date) not to mention his interpretation of new developments tend to be considered illogical or poor at best.... therefore he is confused that you would offer David Axe anything resembling praise.
I prefer to look at these things on a case-by-case basis.

That sentence was in fact not intended to be fully in earnest, but it's indeed unrealistic to expect that to be understood at SDF.

What can even be said about this substantive critique?

I might quote anyone who has something relevant to say. And yes, recently The National Interest has apparently had timely coverage of J-20 developments, as noted here and on the previous page.

On a different note, the Combat Aircraft article attributes the gun information to Li Gang, which is, as far as I know, incorrect.

If I'm not wrong our very own Deino wrote the Combat Aircraft article! Maybe he needs to write a retraction?

If this is wrong, then indeed I must apologise and should correct this part.... but who then is the rource of the statement, that the curent ones lack a gun?

Thanks and all the best for 2019,
Deino

there was a time many believed this is where the gun port located. looked like nothing can be sure now.

Umm no. People speculated that that was the gas vent for the gun port, not the gun port itself. The speculated position for the gun port is much further up the fuselage.

We also know from the same source that said the J-20 currently doesn’t mount a gun that there is a place for it to be mounted.

Dogfights don't occur like they used to anymore over Vietnam. Modern fourth-generation fighters have engaged other fourth-generation (and older) fighters with missiles, almost completely. Just look at the examples in Iraq, Yugoslavia, Ethiopian-Eritrean War, etc.

And a stealth fighter should not be getting into engagements that require a gun anyway. If it ever gets to that case, it would make sense for the J-20 to retire to the back and allow accompanying fourth-generation fighters (J-10/11/16) in the formation to engage. The guns are with them.
