Well I think the PLAAF would pretty much know exactly at what ranges Indian MKIs might be able to detect J20s seeing how the PLAAF also has the Su35c which has a superior radar to the Bars on the MKIs.

If the Su35 cannot see J20s from XXkm out, then it’s pretty much a certainty that neither can the MKI.

If J20s ever need to take on MKIs, the J20s would enjoy a far more overwhelming advantage than a typical 5th vs 4th encounter since they will have far more definitive and accurate data on the ranges and circumstances under which they might be detectable. Removing a lot of the guesswork and risk involved.

One of the many good reasons we see PLAAF owning Su-35s. Test actual effectiveness of the Su-35's claimed ability to spot stealth fighters. So if J-20 cannot be detected in any effective way, then Su-35 is completely useless against F-22 + F-35, J-20 is stealthy enough to avoid detection despite claims from Sukhoi, or F-22 etc are more observable than J-20 (highly unlikely but here are the three possibilities).

MKI is decades old technology now. The leaders and innovators are exploring 6th gen parameters if not further along. MKI is based on 70s cold war era tech through and through. It's about as effective as J-10b and J-11b. The only thing formidable about MKI is it's range, payload, and numbers employed by IAF which are inherently good qualities that are not really diminished by time.

Makes me wonder how the Su-35 vs J-20 results went. Judging by the glowing reviews and statements made about J-20 and no delays or upsets in production and delivery, seems like it's okay to assume J-20 performed as desired. No solid news on more Su-35 deliveries yet but could still be very much a real deal. Weren't there some reports about PLAAF being very pleased with Su-35 or was that RT/ Sputnik/ South Front sourced info? Either way, more Su-35s reflects poorly on J-11D program. That's if it is true.

There is a rumor that J-20 beats Su-35's 4:0.

There’s a huge leap in advantage between a 4th and 5th gen. There is also the force multiplier effect in play and the ‘psyche’ factor. If you know the opfor has 5th gen aircrafts roaming the skies and your best is only a 4++, odds are you won’t send them out in the first place.
The ONLY exception is if you truly are fighting for your own survival as in fighting off invading hordes coming to conquer your nation. The odds of this type of war happening these days is slim to none.

from "several Kilometers" a Pilot with a good pair of eyes wouldn't need the Radar.

Hahaha. I was thinking the same thing. I think the visibility range from human eye is about 2-3 miles (that would 5 km) on a clear day?

I guess from now on, the Chinese pilots will wait until their fighters are within the visible range of the Indians before they fire any of their missiles...

Testing out radar detection ranges is on thing, full simulated air combat is something else entirely.

Considering that PLAAF Su35s were only delivered a few months ago, I would not expect their pilots to have had enough time to have gained full proficiency with the type yet.

As such, I am sceptical of any claimed exercise results this early.

Although they could just fly both up there and see at what range the Irbis gets a solid lock to guide missiles at J-20.

Yes, that’s pretty what I meant with testing radar detection ranges.

Although it will probably be more comprehensive, with head-on, side-on, tail chase. And the same but with differing altitudes etc.

They will likely also test out how well the J20 radar’s LPI mode works against the Su35 EW suit.

There are a massive range of tests they could be doing, and I would bet good money that’s what they have been doing and are currently doing.

And to be honest, they will get far more useful data from these kinds of scientific tests than they could expect to get from mock dogfight results.
