Even if it were true that every single Chinese weapon, platform or system was inferior to its American counterpart in every relevant aspect -- which is far from the case -- that state of affairs only holds until it doesn't. By your logic, nothing China makes will ever be equal or superior to its American counterpart: it can't be done because it hasn't been done. In reality, there is a first time for everything, and the signs of convergence across a vast range of domains are unquestionable.
Not to say I agree with any side about superiority but I recall Stalin's comment during WWII about "Quantity is a quality by itself". So it is clear that at this stage, China's capacity will increase and its rate of building accelerate plus it would be able to concentrate its resources in East Asia.

It's ok, fellas. Yodello is only expressing his opinion as a "maybe" for us to consider. No offense to him, but it is his way to have little faith. Two months ago, he was screaming incompetence and cowardice at Beijing because he believed that India would indefinitely occupy the area in Doklam and win the standoff because the PLA would not open fire. When the stand-off ended, he expressed his great shock and delight at how well China shaped the situation and its outcome all without firing a shot, resulting in his new-found admiration for the decision-makers in Zhongnanhai. Well now that we're onto the topic of aircraft, it seems that old habits die hard, don't they, Yodello? Unfortunately, it may take a little more than a month for you to get your epiphany this time...

It's ok to have your own opinion and express it, but it is impossible to persuade others who disagree with you. After all, judgment and feelings are very subjective. In terms of weapon systems, there is no way to test which one is better on paper. To actually know we must see a war break out and both sides are equipped with latest gen 5 jets, a very unlikely scenario. But even if that does happen, there will still be people finding excuses and looking for a "fair" competition later.

Let's leave it as that and continue with other discussions.

Just think all the India fan boys who defended Pak Fa over the years. And if eventually India picks US weapons, they will claim F-35 the best ever created. Some of us think like that, too.

But why would China pick Su-35 instead of the potentially more useable Su-34 which they could pull apart and learn from and maybe even reverse engineer and copy?

I thought most people accepted that Su-35 is an alternative to the slow moving J-11D program, the latter could be given up as a whole, so SAC can focus on J-16, drones, or other future projects.

I also think the vectored thrust capability of Su-35 might help in the development of J-20 in some way.

Indians have been doing this for the Su-30mki as well. The fighter that is not even approaching Chinese j-10 or flanker numbers yet completely riddled with problems, accidents, grounding, and less than ideal readiness. They will defend their country's acquisitions to hell and back until they don't. That's when all is revealed. They did that with Arjun and LCA too. Both of which are completely hilarious in the magnitude of hopelessness. Arjun MK2 is double the price of a modern Leopard 2 and even if it as competent and effective, really who wants an indian made leopard 2 at twice the cost. I say we ought to avoid this kind of embarrassment and judge Chinese projects with a bit more criticism when it may be warranted. So far the big boys building and managing these projects have really delivered and punched above their weight.

Agreed. Chinese culture asks for introspection and self-examination on a daily basis. Dick measuring contest is just not our thing.

As weapon system goes, in peace time their only function is deterrence. Exaggeration is self defeating.
