It is possible that they were carrying live rounds. Practice IR missiles usually don't have transparent apertures for IR sensors. Then again most PLAAF practice rounds are blue. Not sure which is which.

I believe they should be training rounds -- live PL-8s have had opaque apertures as well as transparent, and for training IR missiles they should have the same seekers as live rounds.

Some PL-8 variants have opaque/white seekers, and live rounds and training rounds both follow suit. Some PL-8 variants have transparent seekers, and live rounds and training rounds both follow suit.

In the case of PL-10, it has a transparent seeker, so live rounds and training rounds would both follow suit as well imo

Four MRAAMs as expected. Don't remember if people continued to insist on ability to carry six but quite self-evident there is no room left at all. Given PL-15's technology level, we can't expect smaller sized missiles with similar ranges to appear anytime soon. Hopefully they can also carry four ramjet powered longer ranged PL-xx, but the bays don't look long enough for anything longer than PL-15.

A PL-15 with retractable fins and maybe made slightly thinner, could allow six total MRAAMs. Fairly easy task if space allows for. Probably already have those in service if not development. Just not shown so publicly.

I think they'll be able to carry six if the missiles had folded fins. It is apparent from the images that the fins are taking up most of the space, not the missiles themselves.

Either way they both have the same weight. Just goes to show that the J-20 has good maneuverability under combat load.

Could the internal weapons bays re-engineered to carry six PL-15 instead of four?

Supposedly a variant of PL-15 is in the works with further reduced wingspan to allow carriage of six in the weapons bay.

But four PL-15s is quite a respectable loadout, considering the missile is meant to have a dual pulse motor and AESA seeker.
