And how often do the Russians do carrier landings with R27Es?
I am not sure if they ever landed with anything else, haha.
All armed Russian naval flankers were seen with these missiles(and r-73s) only. Migs (Russian or indian) bring something else to the deck, but not su-33s.

One reason may be that carrier weapon storage facilities weren't updated for PL-15 yet. Hard to tell the exact reason as an outsider, but I'm almost certain it can't be PL-15 dimensions.

I assume quite often because Su-33's only BVR weapons are R27s. It's unlikely that PL-15s can't be used on carriers IMO, it's just probably because Liaoning and Shandong are still using a mix of J-15s and J-15Ts of which the former cannot use PL-15s so to simply logistics they just loaded PL-12s on the carrier.

I never said PL15s can’t be used on carriers. But if each missile can only without a modest number of carrier landings, it would make sense you don’t want to be carrying them regularly and eating up those landings needlessly for no real benefit.

this doesn't make sense. i mean how costly PL-15s are ?? automation assembly line with full mass production. absolutely dreadful decision if true..
Missiles have a shelf life, so perhaps this is just the PLAN waiting for the J-15T and J-35 to enter service en masse before they commit to PL-15s.

Makes no sense not to equip your forces with the PL-15 which will more or less represent the bread and butter of China's AA capability.

well, cute orca did say PL-12 improved version is better than PL-15E. So it is very much possible that latest PL-12 has all the electronics upgrade in PL-15 series, just not the dual-stage capability.
And Maybe they are going to put a big order for whatever J-35 will end up using.

Also of note, cute orca said that the radar on J-15T is the best of any 4.5 gen aircraft. So, that makes sense because it came along after J-16. Anyhow, J-15T itself should be a very competitive aircraft when networked together with other assets.

Well the radar is only as capable as the missile is in the grand scheme of things, plus the PL-15E is not particularly a competitive piece of equipment in light of the AIM-260, Meteor, and even the Astra Mk. 3.

If the PLAN really did not purchase or does not plan or purchasing PL-15s, the most likely explanation is that it's waiting for something new, either a particular launch platform or a new missile altogether (PL-16 for example).

PLAN will certainly buy some type of aam more advanced than pl-12 for their j-35s. I don’t think pl-12s are optimized for internal carriage. Aren’t they already testing j-35, which must be carrying something internally imo.
