J-10 Thread IV

it’s hard to see the PLAAF being prepared to give up almost a full year’s worth of J10C production capacity to give the PAF so many brand new J10s in one go.

The assumption being production of these J-10C's started a year ago.

I doubt that's the case, since even I heard about it before the start of the pandemic.

So if they began production years before the announcement, it would've been a small subset of total capacity over time.

So you are suggesting they kept finished production birds in the hanger for two years just to delivery the whole order in one go? Why?

F-22 are being scraped soon and f-35 are being grounded all the time... better to ramp up j-20 production when ws-15 is ready.

The F-35 issues will be resolved. And it looks like the US military is taking delivery of 70+ every year.

If the WS-10 engines are ready now, then they could ramp up to at least 36 J-20s per year. The WS-15 engines can be refitted later

If they can refit them why not, but it's never so easy and sometime not economically feasible. We will not see engine retrofit in early j-10 either with ws-10. If Pakistan receive j-10 fighter they will be new j-10c for that reason. Upgrading j-10b could not be economically interesting, maybe just accepting them like they are at lower price could be a thing tho.

If we take lot 1 to 2 of F-35 for example, talk intensify to just moth balls all of them because engine and spare parts production is not fast enough to maintain them and they lacks most abilities of latest lots (like radar, weapons, g-load, etc). Upgrading them would cost nearly the price of new ones. So F-35 numbers are way overhyped.

That doesn't change the US taking delivery of 70+ F-35s every year. Plus the airframes for South Korea and Japan

We are off topics... but South Korea and Japan are in vicinity of China and are the one to cope with in numbers and China is doing well in that regard.

Because domestically, there was a lot of hesitance in announcing this deal during the pandemic and taking delivery. It would've generated a lot of controversy, to be buying a new platform at a time of global economic chaos.

There's a lot of baggage in announcing new military acquisitions these days. Even with this announcement there is ambivalence in the general public, which obviously has no idea what a "J-10" even is, or why it's needed. All they know is that it's gonna be expensive, at at time when all they care about is inflation. I don't even think the parade display in March is a good idea, it'll just make people complain about how the military is getting new toys. Parades are idiotic anyway, a couple of years ago we lost a Viper during a stupid parade display.

They aren’t going very far. It’s not as if these won’t be very useful to the PLA.
