Unless you are doing live fire exercises training rounds are always better. Every time you carry a missile into the air you are actually using up its lifespan even if you don’t fire it. I recall an episode of Chinese military report that showed JH-7 firing dozens of AA missiles. Pretty sure they wanted to use up the PL-5s before expiration hits.

It why they use the training rounds... i was more talking about the type of training round used to be ready to use any type of ordonance at their disposal. Stockpiles can be quite low sometimes, enough that the US called scrapyards to get their old vietnam era bombs for the gulf war in 91. Keeping older generation ammunition active in training and in good order in shelter is a good choice.

Speaking of refueling probes I wonder if China is experimenting with refueling boom tech as well or is China settling with probe and drouge?

I wonder if this is the Aurora EHUD-2 that was revealed in 2019, or maybe a closely related model.
