Why would they produce just airframe without engines? Clearly, they aren't waiting for foreign ones. So entire batches of domestic engines must have not passed the factory floor.

Seems like there was a production hiccup in the engine side. Color me disappointed. Let's just think that they found a faulty component with certain batches of engines and decided to scrap equipping them.

Do they have engines installed? Hard to see, but at least one j-20 have them clearly installed (#6).

Maybe just waiting for brigade to get enough trained pilots ? Covid could have slowed training somewhat ? Why parking them elsewhere if they will not get used...

Usually when they park them outside the factory like that it means that they produced a lot more inside and have no where to put them.

Could it be that production of the WS-10 is still limited and because of J-15 production for Shandong or J-16 using those engines they temporarily stopped J-10 production? If the engine model is the same a Flanker type will use two engines. Considering J-15 and J-16 production that could impact a lot of J-10 aircraft.

Assuming some of those aircraft under the tarps do lack engines, it could just reflect that the engine and airframe production scale are not yet synced up.
A difference of just a few months could mean an entire batch of aircraft might be waiting that amount of time for engines, but it's not a huge deal. If they're scaling up production of engines to match airframes, that is bound to happen to a degree. More relevant is the amount of time elapsed.

Personally I am skeptical of Scramble's suggestion that J-10C production has "stopped".

I don't see how on earth they could conclude that simply based on pictures taken from the outside.

Uhmm not directly related to the j-10c stop production rumor, but it just comes to mind, has there any news/rumor regarding a possible j-10a MLU program ongoing or in the near future? The earliest j-10 is more than 15 years old, so it’s about the time...but currently, we haven’t heard anything regarding a possible MLU, I’m curious on why...

Like, if there is going to be an MLU,
  • are they going to replace the al-31?
  • Are they going to upgrade to DSI intake?
  • How many airframes change they need to do to a j-10a for it to upgrade to j-10c level, and most importantly, does it worth it? or it might be more economical to build a new j-10c instead?
all these questions just make me think, it's unlikely for a j-10c to stop production in the mid-long term (if there is no new upgrade like J-10d), but possible for a pause in some time. But again, I too, don't think WS-10 should be the reason for the pause, if there is any
